Laser treatment for left eye glaucoma?
Hello Doctor, I apologize for having multiple questions.
Last year, I underwent laser surgery for glaucoma, and after the procedure, I noticed a white line, which the doctor said was normal.
I have mostly adapted to it, but I saw a reassuring response from the doctor, and I would like to ask about my current discomfort.
Occasionally, I see white halos or small white spots when looking at things (the doctors I've consulted have said everything seems fine, and I have scheduled an examination of my optic nerve).
I'm unsure if this is related to the laser treatment.
Previously, during follow-up visits, the doctors said everything looked okay.
If it's not an issue related to the laser, I would like to know what might be causing this.
Thank you for your response, and I appreciate it.

Hello, 雅: Laser treatment does not cause the appearance of white halos or similar small white spots; this condition is most commonly known as floaters.
Floaters can sometimes be undetectable during examinations, so they typically do not have any significant impact.
Please rest assured.

After undergoing laser surgery for glaucoma, it is not uncommon to experience various visual disturbances and discomfort. Your concerns about seeing white lines or halos, as well as the occasional appearance of small white spheres, are valid and warrant further exploration.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that laser treatments for glaucoma, such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) or Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT), aim to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). While these procedures are generally safe and effective, they can lead to temporary changes in vision as the eye adjusts to the new pressure dynamics.
The white lines or halos you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that these visual phenomena are related to the cornea. Post-surgical changes in the cornea, such as swelling or irregularities, can lead to light scattering, resulting in halos or glare. This is particularly common in the weeks following surgery, as the eye heals. If your vision has stabilized and these symptoms persist, it may be worth discussing with your ophthalmologist whether additional treatments or interventions are necessary.
Another consideration is the potential for changes in the optic nerve or retina. Since you mentioned that your doctor is arranging for a check of the optic nerve, this is a prudent step. Conditions such as optic neuropathy or retinal issues can also manifest as visual disturbances, including the symptoms you described. It is crucial to rule out any underlying complications that may require attention.
In terms of the discomfort you are experiencing, it is not unusual for patients to report sensations of pressure or discomfort in the eye after laser surgery. This can be due to inflammation or irritation of the ocular surface. It is essential to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding post-operative care, including the use of prescribed anti-inflammatory or lubricating eye drops to alleviate discomfort.
If your symptoms continue or worsen, it is vital to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional diagnostic tests, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) or visual field testing, to assess the health of your optic nerve and overall visual function.
In summary, while some visual disturbances following laser glaucoma surgery can be normal, persistent or concerning symptoms should always be evaluated by your ophthalmologist. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation. Remember, your vision is precious, and proactive management of any changes is key to maintaining your eye health.
