Wisdom teeth or gum inflammation?
The lower right wisdom tooth has been swollen recently, reaching a height similar to the adjacent molar at its most swollen.
Sometimes it reduces a bit, but there is no pain and the appearance seems normal; it just feels a bit uncomfortable and puffy.
I'm not sure if it's due to the wisdom tooth erupting or if there is gum inflammation.
Thank you.
(Currently, both upper wisdom teeth have fully erupted, and the dentist has said that extraction is not necessary.)

Hello: It is normal to experience mild gingival inflammation during the teething process.
However, if inflammation occurs repeatedly, it is likely due to impacted wisdom teeth that are unable to fully erupt.
If impacted wisdom teeth are present, extraction is recommended.
An X-ray should be taken for further confirmation.
Thank you!

More Info
When it comes to wisdom teeth, particularly the lower right molar, there are several factors to consider regarding swelling and discomfort. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some degree of swelling in the area of your wisdom tooth, which could be attributed to either the growth of the tooth itself or inflammation of the gums surrounding it.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Their growth can sometimes lead to complications, especially if there is insufficient space in the jaw. This can result in the tooth becoming impacted, meaning it does not fully erupt through the gums. An impacted wisdom tooth can cause swelling and discomfort, even if there is no pain. The swelling you are experiencing could be due to the tooth pushing against the gum tissue, causing irritation and inflammation.
On the other hand, gum inflammation, or gingivitis, can also cause similar symptoms. If food particles or plaque accumulate around the wisdom tooth, it can lead to an infection or inflammation of the gums, known as pericoronitis. This condition is particularly common with partially erupted wisdom teeth, where the gum tissue can trap food and bacteria, leading to swelling and discomfort. Even if you are not experiencing pain, the presence of swelling suggests that there may be some underlying inflammation.
Given that you mentioned the swelling sometimes decreases, this could indicate that the inflammation is not constant and may be influenced by factors such as oral hygiene practices or dietary choices. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial, especially with wisdom teeth, as they can be difficult to clean properly. Regular brushing and flossing, along with the use of an antibacterial mouthwash, can help reduce the risk of gum inflammation.
If the swelling persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult a dentist for a thorough examination. They may recommend an X-ray to assess the position of the wisdom tooth and determine if it is impacted or if there are any other underlying issues. If the tooth is indeed impacted or if there is significant gum inflammation, the dentist may suggest extraction of the wisdom tooth to prevent further complications.
In summary, the swelling you are experiencing could be due to either the growth of your wisdom tooth or inflammation of the gums. It is essential to monitor the situation closely and maintain good oral hygiene. If symptoms persist, seeking professional dental advice is the best course of action to ensure your oral health is not compromised.
