Pain similar to muscle soreness below the Adam's apple?

Hello doctor, yesterday I noticed that when I tilted my head back to the limit and performed a neck extension exercise, I felt some pain in the muscles below the Adam's apple (it should be muscle).
There was no pain when I didn't do the extension.
Swallowing does not cause any pain.
When I speak with my head tilted back, there is slight pain, but there is none when I speak with my head down.
If I press below the Adam's apple while tilting my head back, there is slight pain.
Could this be a muscle strain? I'm a bit concerned since it's close to the thyroid area.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, if the pain is more related to changes in posture, it is often associated with muscle inflammation or strains.
It is recommended to rest and apply heat initially.
If there is no improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

It sounds like you are experiencing discomfort in the area below your Adam's apple, particularly when you extend your neck or perform certain movements. Based on your description, it is possible that you are dealing with a muscle strain or tension in the muscles surrounding the neck and throat area.
Muscle strains can occur when the muscles are overstretched or overexerted, which can happen during activities that involve sudden movements or awkward positions. In your case, the pain seems to be associated with specific neck movements, particularly when you extend your neck upwards or perform chin tuck exercises. The fact that you do not experience pain when swallowing or during other normal activities is a good sign, as it suggests that there may not be any underlying issues with your throat or thyroid gland.

The muscles in the neck, including the sternocleidomastoid and the scalene muscles, can become tense or strained due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or sudden changes in position. This tension can lead to localized pain, especially when the affected muscles are engaged during certain movements. The tenderness you feel when pressing on the area below your Adam's apple further supports the idea of muscle strain or tension.

While muscle strain is a likely cause of your discomfort, it is essential to consider other potential factors. For example, if you have recently engaged in activities that require repetitive neck movements or if you have been under significant stress, these could contribute to muscle tightness and pain. Additionally, if you have a history of neck or spinal issues, it may be worth discussing these with a healthcare professional.

To manage your symptoms, consider the following recommendations:
1. Rest and Avoid Aggravating Activities: Give your neck some time to heal by avoiding movements that exacerbate the pain. This includes avoiding extreme neck extensions or any activities that require you to hold your head in an awkward position for extended periods.

2. Apply Heat or Cold: Using a warm compress or heating pad on the affected area can help relax tense muscles and alleviate pain. Alternatively, applying ice can reduce inflammation if there is any swelling.

3. Gentle Stretching and Strengthening: Once the acute pain subsides, gentle stretching exercises for the neck can help improve flexibility and reduce tension. Strengthening exercises for the neck and upper back can also provide support and prevent future strains.

4. Posture Awareness: Pay attention to your posture, especially during activities that require prolonged sitting or looking down, such as using a computer or reading. Maintaining good posture can help reduce strain on the neck muscles.

5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist or an orthopedic specialist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, rule out any serious underlying conditions, and provide tailored treatment options.

In summary, while it is likely that you are experiencing a muscle strain or tension in the neck area, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek professional advice if necessary. Taking proactive steps to manage your discomfort and improve your neck health can lead to a quicker recovery and prevent future issues.
