Abdominal pain and lower back discomfort lasting for several days after a medical abortion?

Hello doctor, I took RU486 on April 18 and the second dose on April 20.
Shortly after, I started experiencing abdominal pain, and a few hours later, I passed a large blood clot.
Since then, I have continued to pass small blood clots.
As of April 26, the bleeding is similar to the third day of my menstrual period and has not decreased.
I am also experiencing persistent abdominal pain and lower back discomfort.
Is this normal?

More Info

After taking medication for abortion, such as RU486 (mifepristone) and misoprostol, it is common to experience a range of symptoms, including abdominal pain and bleeding. The timeline you provided indicates that you took the first dose on April 18 and the second dose on April 20, with subsequent symptoms developing shortly thereafter.

What to Expect After Medication Abortion
1. Bleeding: It is normal to experience bleeding after taking these medications. The bleeding can vary in intensity and may include the passage of blood clots, which is a sign that the uterus is expelling its contents. The amount of bleeding can be similar to a heavy menstrual period, and it may last for several days to a few weeks. In your case, the bleeding seems to be consistent with what is expected, especially if it resembles the flow of a menstrual period on the third day.

2. Abdominal Pain: Cramping and abdominal pain are also common after a medication abortion. This pain is typically caused by the uterus contracting as it expels its contents. The pain can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by lower back pain. The fact that you are experiencing abdominal pain and discomfort is not unusual, especially in the days following the procedure.

3. Duration of Symptoms: While some women may experience a quick resolution of symptoms, others may have prolonged bleeding and cramping. It is important to monitor the symptoms. If the bleeding becomes excessively heavy (soaking through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours), or if the pain becomes unbearable, it is crucial to seek medical attention.

4. Follow-Up Care: It is advisable to have a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider within a week or two after the abortion to ensure that the process has completed successfully and to address any ongoing symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform an ultrasound or other tests to confirm that the uterus is clear of any remaining tissue.

When to Seek Medical Attention
- Heavy Bleeding: If you experience heavy bleeding that soaks through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours.

- Severe Pain: If the abdominal pain is severe and does not improve with over-the-counter pain relief medications.

- Fever or Chills: If you develop a fever or chills, which could indicate an infection.

- Foul-Smelling Discharge: If you notice any foul-smelling discharge, which could also suggest an infection.

Pain Management
For managing pain, over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen (like Panadol) can be effective. However, it is important to follow the dosage instructions and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about taking these medications, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.

Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing—bleeding and abdominal pain—are generally considered normal after a medication abortion. However, it is essential to keep track of the severity and duration of these symptoms and to seek medical advice if they become concerning. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial to ensure your health and well-being during this time.
