Medication abortion
Hello Doctor, it has been over a month since my medical abortion.
I had my first menstrual period after the abortion, and when it ended, I had an ultrasound that indicated everything was mostly clear.
However, after my first period, I started experiencing some light bleeding again.
Should I go for another check-up regarding this situation? Thank you! I'm also not sure if it’s related, but does drinking alcohol after a medical abortion affect the body? I accidentally drank some of my friend's beverage, so I did consume some alcohol.
Thank you, Doctor.

It has been over a month since the medical abortion, and I have already had my first menstrual period after the procedure.
After my period ended, I had an ultrasound, and it was confirmed that my uterus was nearly clear.
However, I started experiencing light bleeding again after my first period.
Should I go for another check-up? Thank you!
Answer: The bleeding is light, and self-monitoring is sufficient.
It is uncertain if there is any relation.
However, does drinking alcohol after a medical abortion affect the body?
Answer: No, it will not affect the body.
P.S.: I accidentally drank from a friend's beverage, but I did consume some.

More Info
After a medical abortion, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience unusual bleeding or spotting for some time. The fact that you had your first menstrual period after the abortion and then experienced additional bleeding can be concerning, but it is not necessarily unusual. This post-abortion bleeding can occur due to several reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, incomplete expulsion of the pregnancy tissue, or even the onset of a new menstrual cycle.
In your case, since you mentioned that you had an ultrasound after your first period and were told that everything looked clear, it is possible that the additional bleeding is related to your menstrual cycle adjusting after the abortion. However, if the bleeding persists, increases in volume, or is accompanied by severe pain or other concerning symptoms (such as fever or foul-smelling discharge), it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may want to perform another ultrasound or other tests to ensure that there are no retained products of conception or other complications.
Regarding your question about alcohol consumption after a medical abortion, it is generally advisable to be cautious with alcohol intake during the recovery period. While there is no direct contraindication between alcohol and the medications typically used for medical abortion (such as mifepristone and misoprostol), alcohol can affect your body in various ways. It can potentially interfere with your recovery, impact your hormonal balance, and may exacerbate any feelings of anxiety or depression that can sometimes follow an abortion.
Moreover, if you are taking any medications for pain management or other conditions post-abortion, alcohol can interact with those medications, leading to increased side effects or reduced effectiveness. Therefore, while an occasional small amount of alcohol may not pose a significant risk, it is best to limit your intake and consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your specific situation.
In summary, while some post-abortion bleeding can be normal, persistent or heavy bleeding warrants medical attention. Additionally, being mindful of alcohol consumption during your recovery is wise, as it can affect your overall health and recovery process. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns you may have during your recovery.
