Menstruation is delayed, and there is only a small amount of brown blood?

Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle is usually quite regular, with a maximum delay of 1-3 days.
This time, it has been delayed for 6 days.
For the past two days, when I wipe after using the restroom, there is only a little bit of brownish discharge and some red blood, and I also feel nauseous.
Could you please explain the possible reasons for this phenomenon? Thank you.

Bai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/05/06

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause intermenstrual bleeding are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, lesions in the uterus or cervix, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist if symptoms persist or worsen to determine if there is a hormonal imbalance or other underlying causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When experiencing a delayed period accompanied by brown discharge, it is understandable to feel concerned, especially if your menstrual cycle has been regular in the past. A delay of six days, along with the presence of brown and red discharge, can be attributed to several potential causes, and it is important to consider various factors to understand your situation better.

Firstly, the brown discharge you are observing is often old blood that has taken longer to exit the body. This can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, or it may indicate that your body is preparing for menstruation. In some cases, brown discharge can also be a sign of implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. However, this is typically light and occurs around the time your period is due, so it is essential to consider your recent sexual activity and whether there is a possibility of pregnancy.

Given that you mentioned feeling nauseous, this symptom could be related to hormonal changes in your body. Stress, changes in diet, or illness can also contribute to nausea and may affect your menstrual cycle. Stress, in particular, can disrupt the hormonal balance necessary for regular ovulation and menstruation, leading to delays. If you have been under significant stress or have experienced any lifestyle changes, this could be a contributing factor.

Another possibility is that you may be experiencing a condition known as anovulation, where the ovaries do not release an egg during a menstrual cycle. This can lead to irregular periods and may result in brown discharge as the body sheds the uterine lining without a typical menstrual cycle. Hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid issues, or other endocrine disorders, can also lead to delayed periods and abnormal discharge.

If you have had unprotected sexual intercourse during your cycle, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test, especially since you are experiencing symptoms like nausea. Home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, so if your period does not arrive soon, testing again in a few days may provide more clarity.

In summary, the combination of a delayed period and brown discharge can be due to several factors, including hormonal changes, stress, potential pregnancy, or underlying health conditions. If your period does not start soon or if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can provide personalized advice, conduct necessary tests, and help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Remember, maintaining a record of your menstrual cycle and any accompanying symptoms can be helpful for your healthcare provider in making an accurate diagnosis.
