Can I apply a facial mask on a scar in the philtrum?

Doctor, I accidentally burned the philtrum area of my face with smoke about two weeks ago.
I visited a dermatologist who said the wound is minor and that I can just apply scar cream without needing to focus on sun protection.
The wound has healed, but the burn area is slightly red and a bit dark.
I usually use face masks; can I continue to use them? After using the mask, can I wash my face and then apply the scar cream?

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

In principle, it is acceptable; however, if redness or irritation occurs while using the mask, it should be discontinued immediately.

More Info

When it comes to caring for scarred skin after a burn, especially on the face, it's essential to approach the situation with caution. Based on the information provided, it seems that you have experienced a minor burn and have already consulted a dermatologist who advised you on the appropriate care. Here’s a comprehensive response to your question regarding the use of face masks on scarred skin.

Firstly, using face masks on scarred skin can be permissible, but there are several factors to consider. Since your burn is relatively recent (about two weeks old), the skin is still in the healing process. The fact that your dermatologist has indicated that the wound is light and has recommended applying scar ointment is a good sign. However, it’s crucial to monitor how your skin reacts to any additional products, including face masks.

1. Skin Sensitivity: After a burn, the skin can be particularly sensitive. If you choose to use a face mask, opt for one that is gentle and free from harsh chemicals or fragrances that could irritate the skin. Look for masks that contain soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, or hyaluronic acid, which can help hydrate and calm the skin.

2. Patch Test: Before applying a face mask to the entire area, consider doing a patch test on a small section of the scarred skin. This will help you determine if your skin reacts negatively to the mask. If you notice any redness, irritation, or discomfort, it’s best to avoid using that product.

3. Post-Mask Care: If you decide to use a face mask and it does not cause any adverse reactions, make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly afterward. After washing off the mask, you can apply the scar ointment as directed by your dermatologist. This will help ensure that the skin remains moisturized and that the scar treatment is effectively absorbed.

4. Avoiding Excessive Manipulation: While it may be tempting to use various products to speed up healing and improve the appearance of scars, excessive manipulation of the skin can lead to irritation or even worsen the scar. Therefore, it’s advisable to keep your skincare routine simple and focused on healing.

5. Sun Protection: Although your dermatologist mentioned that you do not need to focus on sun protection at this stage, it’s important to remember that UV exposure can worsen the appearance of scars. If you are going to be outside, consider applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the healing skin.

6. Follow-Up with Your Dermatologist: Since your situation is unique, it’s always best to follow up with your dermatologist regarding any new products you wish to introduce into your skincare routine. They can provide personalized advice based on the specifics of your burn and skin type.

In summary, while you can use face masks on scarred skin after a burn, it’s essential to choose gentle products, perform patch tests, and follow up with your scar treatment. Always prioritize the health of your skin and consult with your dermatologist if you have any concerns or questions about your skincare regimen.
