Feeling Pulsations in the Abdomen While Lying Flat: Is It Normal? - Cardiology

When lying flat on your stomach, there is a sensation of pulsation in the abdomen?

Hello doctor, I am 19 years old, my blood pressure is normal, and I am slightly overweight with a BMI close to 24.
I do not smoke or drink alcohol, and I am not sexually active.
Recently, I noticed that when I lie flat and hold my breath, I can feel my abdomen pulsating, but there are no lumps when I touch it.
This does not occur when I lie on my side or sit up.
Is this normal?

Feeling pulsations in the abdomen while lying flat can be concerning, especially if it is a new sensation for you. At 19 years old, with normal blood pressure and no significant lifestyle risk factors such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, it is likely that what you are experiencing is not indicative of a serious medical condition. However, it is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek further evaluation.

The sensation of pulsations in the abdomen can often be attributed to the normal functioning of the abdominal aorta, which is the large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the lower parts of the body. When you lie flat and hold your breath, the position may make you more aware of the pulsations of the aorta, especially if you have a higher body mass index (BMI), as the abdominal fat can sometimes amplify these sensations. This is typically more noticeable in individuals who are overweight or have a higher BMI, as the layer of fat can create a different sensory experience when pressure is applied.

Additionally, the abdominal muscles may relax when lying flat, allowing for more pronounced sensations of blood flow or movement within the abdomen. If you are not feeling any pain, discomfort, or other concerning symptoms, it is likely that this is a benign phenomenon. However, if the pulsations are accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, or any other unusual sensations, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional.

In some cases, pulsations can also be related to gastrointestinal activity, such as peristalsis, which is the movement of the intestines as they process food. This can sometimes be felt as a rhythmic sensation in the abdomen, particularly when lying down.
If you are concerned about the pulsations or if they persist, it would be wise to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan to rule out any vascular abnormalities or other underlying conditions.

In summary, while feeling pulsations in the abdomen while lying flat can be normal, especially in your case, it is essential to monitor the situation. If you experience any additional symptoms or if the sensation becomes bothersome, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action. Always trust your instincts when it comes to your health, and do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for peace of mind.
