When I squint my right eye, I see a bright line or streak?

Hello, I have high myopia, and for the past two months, when I squint my eyes, I see a bright line in my right eye.
When looking at a bright sky, if I continue to squint, I see two small dark spots.
When observing objects without squinting, there are also bright lines appearing along the edges of the objects.
What could be the issue?

Hello, Rainbow: Based on your situation, it seems like you may be experiencing symptoms of floaters.
Please take the time to visit an ophthalmologist for a thorough examination to confirm this.
Since you have high myopia, it would also be advisable to check your retina.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is available: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses are only for reference; it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.
Sincerely, Gao Pi-Lin.

The visual disturbances you are experiencing, particularly the bright lines and spots in your right eye, can be concerning, especially given your high degree of myopia (nearsightedness). Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a phenomenon known as "visual artifacts," which can occur for several reasons, particularly in individuals with significant refractive errors like high myopia.

Firstly, it's important to understand that high myopia can lead to changes in the structure of the eye, including the retina and vitreous body. These changes can sometimes result in visual disturbances such as flashes of light, floaters, or the perception of lines or patterns. The bright lines you see when squinting or looking at bright backgrounds could be related to the way light is refracted through the eye or how the retina is responding to light stimuli.

One possible explanation for the bright lines could be related to the phenomenon of "entoptic phenomena," which are visual effects whose source is within the eye itself. For instance, when you squint, you may be altering the way light enters your eye, which can enhance the visibility of certain structures within the eye, such as the vitreous gel or even the retinal blood vessels. This can create the appearance of bright lines or patterns, especially against a bright background like the sky.

Another consideration is the possibility of a retinal issue. In individuals with high myopia, there is an increased risk of retinal detachment or tears, which can present with symptoms such as flashes of light, new floaters, or changes in vision. If the bright lines you are seeing are accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow or curtain effect in your vision, or a significant change in your overall vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention from an eye care professional.

Additionally, the presence of visual disturbances can sometimes be associated with migraines or other neurological conditions, particularly if they are transient and accompanied by other symptoms such as headache, nausea, or visual aura. However, given your specific symptoms and history of high myopia, it is essential to prioritize a thorough examination by an ophthalmologist.

In summary, while the bright lines you are experiencing may be related to benign entoptic phenomena or changes in your eye due to high myopia, they could also indicate a more serious condition, particularly if they are new or accompanied by other concerning symptoms. It is highly recommended that you schedule an appointment with an eye care specialist for a comprehensive eye examination, including a dilated fundus exam, to rule out any potential retinal issues and to ensure your visual health is properly managed. Regular eye exams are particularly important for individuals with high myopia to monitor for any changes that may require intervention.
