Is it possible to take a urine test for pregnancy during menstruation?
I think the doctor might find my question strange, but I actually want to ask on behalf of my girlfriend.
Her menstrual cycle has changed; it used to last six to seven days, but now it only lasts four to five days and the flow is lighter.
I tend to be overly anxious, so I suggested she take a urine pregnancy test to check for pregnancy.
I was worried the doctor might think it was unnecessary since she already had her period, so she took the test on the fourth day of her period without informing the doctor that she was menstruating.
The result came back negative.
I just want to know, is it accurate to take a urine pregnancy test during the menstrual period to check for pregnancy? Thank you.
Azheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/11/11
Dr. Zhou Dali reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, A-Zheng: There is no need to take a pregnancy test during menstruation, unless there is uncertainty about whether it is menstrual bleeding, in which case a pregnancy test can be done to rule out other causes of bleeding.
I hope you take your girlfriend to the clinic for further evaluation.

When it comes to taking a pregnancy test during your period, there are several important factors to consider. First and foremost, it’s essential to understand how pregnancy tests work. Most home pregnancy tests detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine, which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Typically, hCG levels rise significantly after a missed period, making testing more reliable at that time.
If your girlfriend is experiencing a change in her menstrual cycle—such as a shorter duration or lighter flow—this could be a sign of various factors, including stress, hormonal changes, or even pregnancy. However, it’s crucial to note that some women may experience light bleeding or spotting even when they are pregnant, which can sometimes be mistaken for a period.
In your case, since the pregnancy test was taken during her period, it may not be the most accurate time to test. While it is technically possible to take a pregnancy test during menstruation, the reliability of the result can be affected. If she is indeed experiencing a true menstrual period, the test is likely to be negative if she is not pregnant. However, if she is experiencing implantation bleeding or other early pregnancy symptoms, the test may not detect hCG levels yet, leading to a false negative result.
For the most accurate results, it is generally recommended to wait until at least the first day of a missed period to take a home pregnancy test. This allows enough time for hCG levels to rise to a detectable level. If your girlfriend's period is significantly lighter or shorter than usual, and if she suspects she might be pregnant, it would be wise to wait a few days after her expected period date to retest.
If she continues to have unusual bleeding or if there are any other concerning symptoms—such as severe cramping, dizziness, or unusual discharge—it would be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test and provide further evaluation.
In summary, while it is possible to take a pregnancy test during a period, it may not yield the most accurate results. For the best chance of an accurate reading, it’s recommended to wait until after a missed period. If there are ongoing concerns about her menstrual cycle or potential pregnancy, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step.
