Pregnant or about to get your period?
Hello, doctor.
I previously asked you a question regarding my situation.
Last time, I mentioned that I felt like my period was about to come due to taking traditional Chinese medicine, and when I stopped taking it, that feeling also ceased.
I had intimate contact with my boyfriend on May 21 and May 24.
On May 21, we were both fully clothed, and there was no genital friction.
On May 24, my boyfriend's hand entered my vagina, but he had washed his hands to remove any semen beforehand.
My last period was on March 23, and it lasted for 7 days, with my next period starting on April 30, which also lasted for 7 days.
However, I have not gotten my period this month (my menstrual cycle is usually irregular, ranging from 32 to 40 days).
The last two cycles were 38 days apart, and I have experienced longer delays in the past.
Yesterday, I started having a headache and accidentally consumed a significant amount of candy that was a month past its expiration date.
I would like to ask you again:
1.
Could the headache and abdominal pain be signs of pregnancy?
2.
I have been measuring my ear temperature this week, and it has consistently been 36.6°C.
Is this considered a higher temperature associated with pregnancy? What is the normal ear temperature during pregnancy?
3.
The abdominal pain feels similar to menstrual cramps, sometimes it is painful and sometimes it is not; at times it is very painful, and at other times it is mild.
Based on a 38-day cycle, if I were to be late by a week, my period would be due this Friday.
What is your opinion on my symptoms? Could this be pain associated with pregnancy?
4.
Previously, you mentioned that my irregular cycle might not indicate pregnancy and that I didn't need to take a pregnancy test.
Given my recent situation, do you think there is a possibility of pregnancy, or does it suggest that my period is approaching?

1.
Headaches and abdominal pain are not signs of pregnancy.
2.
A normal ear temperature during pregnancy typically ranges from 36.9°C to 37.2°C.
3.
The abdominal pain you are experiencing feels similar to menstrual cramps, with varying intensity.
Based on a 38-day cycle, if your period is late by a week, it should arrive by this Friday.
This pain is not indicative of pregnancy.
4.
Previously, you mentioned that your doctor indicated your menstrual cycle was irregular and that you were unlikely to be pregnant, so there may not be a need for a pregnancy test.
Given your recent symptoms, it is more likely that your period is approaching.

More Info
It's understandable to feel anxious and confused when experiencing symptoms that could indicate either pregnancy or an impending menstrual period. Let's break down your concerns and symptoms to provide clarity.
1. Headaches and Abdominal Pain: Headaches can be a common symptom of both early pregnancy and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In early pregnancy, hormonal changes can lead to headaches, while PMS can also cause similar discomfort due to hormonal fluctuations. The abdominal pain you describe, which feels like menstrual cramps, could also be indicative of either condition. If the pain is mild and intermittent, it may suggest that your period is approaching. However, if it becomes severe or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
2. Body Temperature: A slight increase in body temperature can occur during pregnancy due to hormonal changes, particularly an increase in progesterone. However, a normal ear temperature of 36.6°C (approximately 97.88°F) is within the typical range for most individuals. During pregnancy, some women may experience a slight increase in basal body temperature, but this is usually measured in the morning before getting out of bed. If you are concerned about your temperature or any other symptoms, it might be beneficial to track your temperature over a few days.
3. Cramps and Timing: The cramping you are experiencing could indeed be related to your menstrual cycle. Given that your periods have been irregular, it’s possible that your body is preparing for menstruation. If your last period was on March 23 and you typically have a cycle of 32-40 days, you could expect your next period around late April to early May. If you are experiencing cramps that feel similar to menstrual cramps, it could indicate that your period is on its way. However, if you miss your period and symptoms persist, it would be advisable to take a pregnancy test.
4. Possibility of Pregnancy: Based on the information you've provided, including the timing of your intimate encounters and the nature of your symptoms, it seems more likely that your body is experiencing premenstrual symptoms rather than early signs of pregnancy. Since you mentioned that you have had irregular cycles and that your last period was on March 23, it is possible that your cycle is simply delayed. If you have concerns about the possibility of pregnancy, taking a home pregnancy test after a missed period would provide more definitive answers.
In summary, while your symptoms could potentially indicate pregnancy, they are also consistent with premenstrual syndrome, especially given your history of irregular cycles. If your period does not arrive within a week or if your symptoms worsen, I recommend consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and possibly a pregnancy test. It's important to listen to your body and seek medical advice if you feel uncertain or if your symptoms cause you distress. Remember, early intervention and communication with a healthcare professional can help alleviate anxiety and provide clarity regarding your health.
