Questions about gonorrhea?
Three months ago, I experienced symptoms that were suspected to be gonorrhea (discharge from the glans), but it resolved after a day or two, and I haven't had any unusual symptoms since then.
I did not seek medical attention.
Am I cured, or do I still need to go to the hospital for examination or treatment? I'm a bit worried, thank you.

When it comes to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea, it's important to understand that symptoms can sometimes resolve on their own, but this does not necessarily mean that the infection has cleared from your system. Gonorrhea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, can present with symptoms such as discharge from the penis, pain during urination, and swelling in the testicles. However, many individuals may experience mild symptoms or none at all, which can lead to a false sense of security regarding their health status.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing symptoms three months ago that resolved within a couple of days. While it's possible that your body could have fought off a mild infection, it is also possible that the infection is still present but asymptomatic. Gonorrhea can lead to serious complications if left untreated, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which can cause infertility, and in men, it can lead to epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that anyone who has had unprotected sex or has symptoms of an STI should get tested, regardless of whether the symptoms have resolved. Testing is the only way to confirm whether or not you have an active infection. Gonorrhea can be diagnosed through a urine test or a swab of the affected area, and it is important to get tested even if you feel fine.
Moreover, if you were treated for gonorrhea in the past, it is crucial to get retested three months after treatment, as reinfection is common. If you have had multiple sexual partners or if your partner has been diagnosed with an STI, it is advisable to get tested as well.
In summary, even if your symptoms have disappeared, it is highly recommended that you visit a healthcare provider for testing. This will not only provide peace of mind but also ensure that if you do have an infection, you can receive appropriate treatment. Gonorrhea is typically treated with antibiotics, and early treatment can prevent complications. Additionally, if you are sexually active, consider discussing safer sex practices with your healthcare provider to reduce the risk of STIs in the future.
In conclusion, do not wait for symptoms to reappear or for any new symptoms to develop. Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for testing as soon as possible. Taking proactive steps regarding your sexual health is essential for your well-being and that of your partners.
