Blurred vision

Hello, Doctor Gao.
I had a dilated eye exam yesterday, and the doctor indicated that there were no significant issues.
However, my distance vision in the left eye is still blurry and not very clear.
The attending physician mentioned that he currently sees no problems and advised me not to worry too much, suggesting it might be due to fatigue.
However, after a night of rest, my left eye's distance vision remains blurry this morning.
I would like to ask:
1.
Is there any disease affecting my left eye?
2.
I recently used steroid eye drops for about two weeks; could this be a side effect of the medication?
3.
Is it possible that I have cataracts?
4.
If it is a side effect of the eye drops, how long might it take to resolve? Will it ever fully resolve?
5.
If it is due to fatigue, how long might it take to improve?
6.
If my distance vision remains blurry, should I undergo a CT scan?
Thank you, Doctor Gao.

Hello Yoyo:
1.
Is there a disease in my left eye?
Answer: There are many reasons for blurred vision; I cannot determine without an examination.

2.
I used steroid eye drops for about two weeks recently; could this be a side effect of the medication?
Answer: Using steroid eye drops for two weeks should not cause such effects.

3.
Could it possibly be cataracts?
Answer: A doctor can easily identify cataracts upon examination.
If the doctor did not mention cataracts, it is likely not the case.

4.
If it is a side effect of the eye drops, how long will it take to improve? Will it never get better?
Answer: It is likely not a side effect.

5.
If it is due to fatigue, how long will it take to improve?
Answer: If it is due to fatigue, resting for a day or two should help with recovery.

6.
If I still have blurred distance vision, do I need a CT scan?
Answer: First, we need to clarify the cause of the blurriness.
The first step is to confirm your previous vision, then get the appropriate glasses to compare your past and current vision to see if there is a real difference.
You may also want to seek opinions from other doctors, as they may have different insights.
If a CT scan is necessary, the doctor will recommend it.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your blurry vision, particularly in your left eye. I understand how distressing it can be to experience visual disturbances, especially when they affect your daily activities and peace of mind. Let’s address your questions systematically.

1. Is there a disease affecting my left eye?
While your doctor has indicated that there are no significant issues detected during your examination, persistent blurry vision can sometimes be indicative of underlying conditions. Common causes of blurry vision include refractive errors (like myopia or hyperopia), astigmatism, or even more serious conditions such as retinal issues or cataracts. Given that your doctor has not found any immediate concerns, it may be beneficial to monitor your symptoms and follow up if they persist or worsen.

2. Could the steroid eye drops I used be causing side effects?
Steroid eye drops can have side effects, including increased intraocular pressure, cataract formation, and potential changes in vision. If you have used these drops for an extended period, it is plausible that they could contribute to your symptoms. However, the onset of side effects can vary based on the individual and the duration of use. If you suspect that the drops are affecting your vision, it is essential to discuss this with your eye care provider.

3. Is it possible that I have cataracts?
Cataracts typically develop gradually and are more common in older adults, but they can occur in younger individuals, especially if there are risk factors such as prolonged steroid use, diabetes, or a family history of cataracts. Symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, and seeing halos around lights. If your blurry vision persists, it may be worthwhile to have a more thorough examination to rule out cataracts.

4. If the eye drops are causing side effects, how long will it take to recover?
Recovery from side effects of steroid eye drops can vary. If the drops are discontinued, any associated side effects may resolve within days to weeks, but this can depend on the duration of use and individual response. It’s crucial to consult your eye doctor before stopping any prescribed medication.

5. If fatigue is the cause, how long will it take to improve?
Visual fatigue can result from prolonged screen time, lack of sleep, or stress. Recovery from visual fatigue can vary, but generally, with adequate rest, hydration, and reducing eye strain (such as taking regular breaks from screens), you may notice improvement within a few days. However, if symptoms persist, further evaluation may be necessary.

6. If my distance vision remains blurry, should I undergo a CT scan?
A CT scan is not typically the first step in evaluating blurry vision. Instead, a comprehensive eye examination, including visual acuity tests, refraction tests, and possibly imaging studies like optical coherence tomography (OCT) or fundus photography, would be more appropriate. These tests can provide valuable information about the health of your retina and optic nerve.

In summary, while your initial examination did not reveal significant issues, persistent blurry vision warrants further observation and possibly additional testing. It’s essential to communicate openly with your eye care provider about your symptoms, any medications you are taking, and your concerns. They can provide tailored advice and determine the best course of action based on your specific situation. Remember to take care of your overall health, manage stress, and ensure you’re giving your eyes the rest they need. If your symptoms continue or worsen, don’t hesitate to seek further evaluation.
