Will the redness on the cheeks fade?

Hello, doctor.
Over a month ago, I accidentally spilled SK-II Facial Treatment Essence on a cotton pad and applied it to my cheeks, then fell asleep with it on for several days.
As a result, both sides of my cheeks became red.
I consulted a dermatologist who prescribed a contact dermatitis ointment.
After applying it, the redness on my cheeks has diminished, but even after more than a month, I can still see faint red marks on my cheeks.
I would like to ask if this phenomenon will completely resolve or if my skin has been damaged and will not fully recover, considering it has been over a month.

Mi, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/06/20

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is difficult to make a definitive diagnosis.
If it is causing significant distress, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Cheek redness following skin irritation can be a concerning issue, especially when it persists for an extended period. In your case, it seems that the redness on your cheeks arose from prolonged exposure to a skincare product, which led to contact dermatitis. This condition is characterized by inflammation of the skin due to direct contact with an irritant or allergen.
When you initially applied the SK-II product on your cheeks and left it on for several days, it likely caused an inflammatory response in your skin. The fact that you sought medical attention and received a topical corticosteroid (the contact dermatitis ointment) indicates that the irritation was significant enough to warrant treatment. After applying the ointment, you noticed a reduction in redness, which is a positive sign that your skin was responding to the treatment.

However, the lingering mild redness you are experiencing after more than a month suggests that your skin may still be in the healing process. Skin irritation can lead to post-inflammatory erythema (PIE), which is a temporary condition where the skin remains red even after the initial irritation has resolved. This redness can take weeks to months to fade, depending on various factors, including the severity of the initial irritation, your skin type, and how well you care for your skin during the healing process.

In terms of whether the redness will completely fade away, it is generally expected that post-inflammatory redness will diminish over time. However, the timeline can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as your overall skin health, age, and any underlying conditions (like rosacea or sensitive skin) can influence the duration of redness.
To support the healing process and potentially speed up the fading of the redness, consider the following recommendations:
1. Gentle Skincare Routine: Use mild, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers to avoid further irritation. Avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants that can aggravate sensitive skin.

2. Sun Protection: Protect your skin from sun exposure, as UV rays can exacerbate redness and prolong healing. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 daily.

3. Topical Treatments: Products containing ingredients like niacinamide, azelaic acid, or licorice root extract can help reduce redness and improve skin tone. However, introduce any new products gradually and monitor for any adverse reactions.

4. Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid any skincare products or environmental factors that may trigger further irritation or allergic reactions.

5. Consult a Dermatologist: If the redness persists or worsens, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist for further evaluation. They may recommend treatments such as laser therapy or prescription medications to help reduce redness.

In conclusion, while it is likely that the redness on your cheeks will fade over time, it is essential to continue caring for your skin gently and to monitor any changes. If you have concerns about the healing process or if the redness does not improve, seeking professional advice from a dermatologist is advisable. They can provide tailored recommendations based on your specific skin condition and needs.
