Treatment issues related to Mycoplasma infections?
Hello doctor, after taking Doxycycline for a week, although my symptoms have improved, I still feel a slight pain when urinating, and there is no discharge.
During my follow-up visit, the doctor advised against continuing Doxycycline and did not prescribe any other antibiotics.
The doctor suggested monitoring the situation for another week before making a judgment.
Is this approach appropriate? I am currently seeing a doctor abroad.
Thank you.

Hello: Generally, foreign physicians prescribe medication according to standard durations, so there should be no theoretical issues.
However, it is important to drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and spicy foods for a period of time.
Practicing safe sex is crucial.
Daily walking is also beneficial.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the use of antibiotics like doxycycline, it’s important to understand both the effectiveness of the medication and the potential side effects. Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that is commonly prescribed for various bacterial infections, including UTIs. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which ultimately leads to the death of the bacteria.
In your case, after one week of doxycycline treatment, you noticed some improvement in your symptoms but still experienced slight pain during urination. This could indicate that while the antibiotic is effective against the bacteria causing the infection, there may still be residual inflammation or irritation in the urinary tract that needs time to heal. It’s also possible that the infection is not fully resolved, or that there is another underlying issue that doxycycline alone cannot address.
The decision made by your physician to not continue doxycycline and to observe your symptoms for another week is reasonable. In many cases, doctors will allow some time for the body to heal after an antibiotic course, especially if there are signs of improvement. Monitoring your symptoms can help determine if further treatment is necessary. If the pain persists or worsens, it may be necessary to revisit the issue and consider other treatment options or further diagnostic tests.
Regarding the potential for antibiotic resistance, it is a valid concern. Overuse or inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to resistant strains of bacteria, which is why doctors often switch medications if a patient does not respond adequately to the initial treatment. However, in your case, it seems that your doctor is taking a cautious approach by observing your symptoms before making any further changes to your treatment plan.
If you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, such as chronic stomach pain, it is crucial to communicate this with your healthcare provider. Some antibiotics can cause gastrointestinal side effects, and if you are experiencing discomfort, your doctor may recommend taking a proton pump inhibitor or an antacid to help manage these symptoms. However, it’s important to note that certain antacids can interfere with the absorption of antibiotics, so timing and type of medication should be discussed with your doctor.
In summary, your current treatment approach seems appropriate given your symptoms and the initial response to doxycycline. It’s essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, especially if your symptoms do not improve or if you have concerns about side effects or interactions with other medications you may be taking. Always follow your doctor's advice and report any new or worsening symptoms promptly.
