Oral contraceptives
I would like to ask about taking oral contraceptives (28 pills) for about six months.
I took the last pill on May 24, and from May 25 to May 31, I took the last seven pills for iron supplementation.
I stopped taking the oral contraceptives on June 1, and as of now, June 30, I still haven't gotten my period.
Is this situation normal? Can suddenly stopping the medication cause a delay or irregularity in the menstrual cycle? Thank you.
Fu~, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/06/30

Hello, it is normal for your period to be delayed after suddenly stopping medication.
If your period does not arrive after more than a week, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
When a woman stops taking birth control pills, it is not uncommon to experience menstrual irregularities, including delayed or missed periods. This phenomenon can be attributed to the hormonal changes that occur in the body once the synthetic hormones from the pills are no longer present. Birth control pills work by regulating hormones to prevent ovulation and manage the menstrual cycle. When you stop taking them, your body may take some time to readjust and return to its natural hormonal rhythm.
In your case, since you stopped taking the birth control pills on June 1, and it is now June 30 without a menstrual period, this could be a normal response. The time it takes for your menstrual cycle to normalize can vary widely among women. Some may experience a return to their regular cycle within a few weeks, while others may take several months. Factors that can influence this include the duration of time you were on the pill, your overall health, stress levels, and any underlying medical conditions.
It is also important to note that the first few cycles after stopping birth control can be particularly unpredictable. Some women may experience heavier or lighter periods, while others may have longer or shorter cycles. This is often referred to as "post-pill amenorrhea" when a woman does not have a period for several months after discontinuing the pill.
If you are concerned about the absence of your period, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test, especially if you have had unprotected intercourse since stopping the pill. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive within a few weeks, or if you experience other symptoms such as severe pain or unusual discharge, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can evaluate your situation more thoroughly and may recommend further tests to rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, while it is generally normal to experience irregularities in your menstrual cycle after stopping birth control pills, it is essential to monitor your body’s responses and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. Your healthcare provider can offer guidance tailored to your specific situation and help you understand what to expect as your body readjusts to its natural hormonal balance.
