Sebaceous Glands: Are Those White Bumps Normal? - Urology

Sebaceous gland issues

Are the small white spots inside the foreskin sebaceous glands? I have seen a doctor who only examined the small bumps on the glans, and the doctor said they were sebaceous glands and that I shouldn't worry, as they are normal.
So, are the ones on the foreskin also normal? They seem to be densely distributed, so it shouldn't be a sexually transmitted infection, right?

That's correct, it's normal.

The presence of small white bumps on the skin, particularly in the genital area, can often be attributed to sebaceous glands, which are normal anatomical structures. These glands produce sebum, an oily substance that helps to lubricate and protect the skin. In the context of the penis, especially under the foreskin, these small white bumps are typically referred to as pearly penile papules or sebaceous cysts. They are benign and are not associated with any sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

When you mention that these white bumps are densely distributed, it is still likely that they are normal sebaceous glands or pearly penile papules. Pearly penile papules are common and usually appear as small, dome-shaped, white or flesh-colored bumps that are arranged in one or two rows around the corona of the glans (the head of the penis). They are not harmful and do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or concern.

It is important to differentiate these normal anatomical features from conditions that may require medical attention. For instance, if the bumps change in appearance, become painful, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, discharge, or lesions, it would be advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare provider. Conditions such as genital warts, which are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), or other infections can present with similar symptoms but typically have distinct characteristics.

In your case, since a doctor has already evaluated the bumps and deemed them normal, it is likely that there is no cause for concern. However, if you are still feeling anxious about their appearance or if there are any changes, it is perfectly reasonable to seek a second opinion or ask for a more thorough examination.
In summary, the white bumps you are observing are likely normal sebaceous glands or pearly penile papules, which are common and not indicative of any disease. Maintaining good hygiene and monitoring for any changes is advisable. If you have further concerns or if the bumps cause discomfort, consulting a urologist or dermatologist would be beneficial for peace of mind and to ensure that there are no underlying issues.
