Lip pain followed by swelling?

Hello doctor, a while ago (about a few months back) one night I suddenly felt a sharp pain and burning sensation in my lips.
The next morning when I looked in the mirror, I noticed that my lips were quite swollen (I couldn't really tell at that time, but I realized it now in comparison).
My lips often peel, and there are some white spots appearing on the sides, along with what looks like blisters.
Could you please tell me what this condition is? I only noticed it after such a long time.
Will it get better? Additionally, at the beginning, my upper lip was also red.

Lip pain and swelling can be caused by a variety of factors, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for effective treatment. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing symptoms that could be related to several conditions, including allergic reactions, infections, or dermatological issues.

Possible Causes
1. Allergic Reactions: One common cause of sudden lip swelling and pain is an allergic reaction. This could be due to food, cosmetics, or environmental allergens. If you have recently changed any products you use on your lips or have eaten something new, this might be the culprit.

2. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): The presence of blisters and the initial burning sensation could indicate a herpes simplex virus infection, commonly known as cold sores. This condition often presents with painful, fluid-filled blisters on or around the lips, which can burst and crust over.

3. Angular Cheilitis: This condition is characterized by inflammation and cracking at the corners of the mouth, which can sometimes extend to the lips. It may be caused by fungal or bacterial infections, often exacerbated by moisture or irritation.

4. Contact Dermatitis: This is a skin reaction resulting from contact with irritants or allergens. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and peeling of the skin on the lips.

5. Cheilitis: This is a general term for inflammation of the lips, which can be caused by various factors, including environmental conditions, nutritional deficiencies (like vitamin B12 or iron), or infections.

Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: If the cause is an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation. For herpes simplex, antiviral creams like acyclovir can be effective if applied early.

2. Oral Antihistamines: If you suspect an allergic reaction, taking an oral antihistamine can help alleviate symptoms.
3. Moisturizers: Keeping your lips moisturized can prevent further irritation and cracking. Look for lip balms that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or shea butter.

4. Avoiding Irritants: Identify and avoid any products that may be causing irritation or allergic reactions. This includes lipsticks, balms, or even certain foods.

5. Consult a Dermatologist: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and may perform tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.

Prognosis
The prognosis for lip pain and swelling largely depends on the underlying cause. If it is an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis, avoiding the irritant and using appropriate topical treatments can lead to improvement within a few days. If it is due to herpes simplex, while the virus remains in the body, outbreaks can be managed with antiviral medications.
In conclusion, while it is concerning that you have been experiencing these symptoms for several months, many conditions affecting the lips are treatable. It is essential to seek medical advice to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and relief from discomfort.
