Problems After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
I had my wisdom tooth extracted on July 5th, and I had stitches afterward.
The stitches were removed a week later on July 12th, and the dentist said everything looked normal and there was not much pain.
However, today, July 16th, I looked in the mirror at the extraction site and noticed it seems a bit hollow compared to after the stitches were removed.
I suspect that a blood clot may have fallen out.
Although I am not experiencing any pain right now, I would like to know if this could be a problem.
Is it normal for the clot to gradually fall out during the healing process? Should I see the dentist immediately, or can I wait until my next appointment unless I experience pain? I am concerned about the possibility of dry socket.
Could you please provide some guidance?

Hello: After having your wisdom teeth removed, you may often encounter the issues you mentioned.
1.
The initial healing of the wound takes about a week, and it may take at least a month for the gum tissue to fully cover the socket, making it no longer visible.
It can take at least six months for the bone to reintegrate and return to a more normal state.
2.
Common symptoms of dry socket include pain, poor wound healing, and even the risk of pus and infection.
If you have any of these concerns, it is advisable to return to your original clinic for follow-up every 2 to 3 weeks.
Thank you!

After having your wisdom tooth extracted, it's completely normal to have concerns about the healing process and any changes you observe in the extraction site. Based on your description, it sounds like you're experiencing some typical post-operative symptoms, but let's break this down further.
Firstly, the presence of a "blood clot" in the extraction site is crucial for proper healing. After a tooth extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect the underlying bone and nerves while the tissue heals. This clot is essential for the healing process, and it typically remains in place for several days to a week. As healing progresses, the clot may dissolve or be replaced by new tissue, which can sometimes give the appearance of a "hole" or "empty" space in the socket.
It's important to note that some degree of change in the appearance of the extraction site is normal as healing occurs. If you are not experiencing any pain, swelling, or signs of infection (such as fever or pus), it is likely that your healing is progressing well. However, if you notice that the area becomes increasingly painful or if you develop any concerning symptoms, it would be wise to consult your dentist sooner rather than later.
Regarding your concern about dry socket (alveolar osteitis), this condition can occur when the blood clot either dislodges or dissolves too early, exposing the bone and nerves beneath. Symptoms of dry socket typically include severe pain that starts a few days after the extraction, often radiating to the ear or jaw, and a foul taste or odor in the mouth. If you are not experiencing these symptoms, it is less likely that you have developed dry socket.
In general, if you have any doubts or concerns about your healing process, it is always best to reach out to your dentist. They can provide a thorough examination and reassurance. If your dentist has already indicated that everything is healing normally, you might consider waiting until your next scheduled appointment unless you experience any new or worsening symptoms.
In summary, while it's normal to feel apprehensive after a wisdom tooth extraction, the changes you're observing may simply be part of the healing process. Keep an eye on the extraction site for any signs of complications, and don't hesitate to contact your dentist if you have any concerns. Your oral health is important, and your dentist is there to help you through this recovery phase.
