Menstrual issues

Hello, my menstrual cycle has been very irregular.
The last period was on May 25, and the one before that was on March 7.
I am currently experiencing some abdominal bloating, and my period has not arrived yet.
Today, when I used the restroom and wiped, there was a bit of yellow-brown with some red on the toilet paper.
Does this mean my period is coming soon?

Jia Jia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/07/17

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Miss Jia Jia: Regarding the issue you raised, it will depend on the duration and amount of bleeding that follows to determine if it is normal.
However, if you frequently experience menstrual cycles longer than 42 days, it is still advisable to schedule an outpatient examination.
The Hualien Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare cares about your health.

Irregular menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the signs and symptoms associated with it is crucial for managing your reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a delay in your menstrual cycle, which can be influenced by various factors.

Firstly, the irregularity of your menstrual cycle, with the last period on May 25 and the previous one on March 7, indicates that your cycles are significantly spaced apart. This can be classified as oligomenorrhea, which is defined as infrequent menstrual periods. The yellowish-brown discharge you observed on the toilet paper could be a sign of several things, including the onset of your menstrual period, old blood being expelled from your body, or even spotting due to hormonal fluctuations.

When it comes to understanding whether your period is approaching, there are a few signs to watch for:
1. Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS): Many women experience symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, and cramping in the days leading up to their period. If you are feeling abdominal bloating, this could be a sign that your period is imminent.

2. Spotting: The yellowish-brown discharge you mentioned could be a form of spotting, which sometimes occurs before a period begins. Spotting can happen for various reasons, including hormonal changes, ovulation, or the beginning of menstruation.

3. Cycle Length: If your cycles are typically irregular, it may be challenging to predict when your next period will arrive. However, if you have a history of irregular cycles, it is not uncommon for your body to take longer to regulate itself.

4. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: Stress, significant weight changes, excessive exercise, and other lifestyle factors can impact your menstrual cycle. If you've experienced any changes in your life recently, it could contribute to your irregularity.

5. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular periods. If you suspect that your irregular cycles are due to a medical condition, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare provider.

Given your situation, it is possible that your period is approaching, especially if you are experiencing symptoms like abdominal bloating and spotting. However, if your irregular cycles continue or if you experience any concerning symptoms, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other unusual changes, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly imaging studies if necessary.

In summary, while the signs you are experiencing may indicate that your period is on its way, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare professional if you have ongoing concerns about your menstrual health. Regular check-ups can help identify any underlying issues and ensure that you maintain optimal reproductive health.
