Varicocele surgery
Hello Doctor, I have been suffering from significant varicocele for several years.
However, since it does not cause pain and my testicles have not shrunk, I have not seen a doctor.
I have tested my semen quality, so I would like to ask if the effectiveness of varicocele surgery decreases with the duration of the condition, or if it can be performed at any time with a certain level of recovery effectiveness? Would it be too late to address this before I enlist in the military?

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
There is actually not much conclusive evidence in your case.
It can only be said that if you have symptoms or poor semen quality, surgery for varicocele may be beneficial for you.
Will the effectiveness of the surgery decrease as the duration of the condition increases? Theoretically, this may be the case, but there is no evidence to support this.

Varicocele surgery is a common procedure aimed at treating varicocele, which is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum. This condition can affect male fertility and may lead to discomfort or other complications over time. Your concern about the timing of the surgery and its effectiveness is valid, especially since you have been living with this condition for several years without experiencing pain or significant changes in testicular size.
To address your question, the effectiveness of varicocele surgery does not necessarily diminish with the duration of the condition. Research indicates that the surgical intervention can be beneficial at any stage, even if the varicocele has been present for several years. The primary goal of the surgery is to improve blood flow and reduce the pooling of blood in the affected veins, which can lead to improved testicular function and potentially enhance sperm quality.
In terms of timing, it is generally advisable to address varicocele sooner rather than later, especially if you are considering starting a family in the future. While you may not currently experience pain or other symptoms, varicocele can have a subtle impact on fertility over time. The longer the condition persists, the more likely it is to affect testicular health and sperm production. Therefore, undergoing surgery before significant changes occur could be beneficial.
Regarding your concern about whether it would be too late to have the surgery before your military service, it is essential to consider the recovery time associated with the procedure. Varicocele surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and most patients can return to normal activities within a week or two. However, it is advisable to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or intense exercise, for a few weeks post-surgery to ensure proper healing.
In summary, it is not too late to consider varicocele surgery, and the timing of the procedure can still yield positive results for your fertility and overall testicular health. If you are contemplating surgery, it would be beneficial to consult with a urologist who specializes in male reproductive health. They can provide you with personalized advice based on your specific situation, including the potential benefits of surgery and the expected recovery timeline.
In addition to surgical options, it is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as factors such as diet, exercise, and avoiding smoking can positively influence sperm quality and overall reproductive health. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional who can guide you through the process and help you make informed decisions regarding your health.
