Can individuals with gastric ulcers exercise?
Hello, Doctor.
During my health check last Monday, an endoscopy revealed the presence of an ulcer, and a biopsy was taken for pathological examination.
However, I do not have any significant discomfort in my stomach.
Two years ago, during an endoscopy, there were signs of healed ulcers, and I also experienced gastroesophageal reflux, but this time I do not have any symptoms of reflux.
The doctor prescribed me Nexium for 28 days.
Since I am relatively thin and have been wanting to increase my muscle strength, I would like to ask if my current condition allows me to engage in strength training or similar exercises.
If that is not advisable, would home exercises like push-ups, dumbbell lifts, or planks affect the healing of my gastric ulcer? Thank you.

More Info
Exercising with a stomach ulcer can be a concern for many individuals, especially when considering the potential impact on healing and overall health. Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. They can be caused by factors such as Helicobacter pylori infection, prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), excessive alcohol consumption, and stress.
In your case, it appears that you have been diagnosed with a stomach ulcer but are not currently experiencing significant discomfort. You have also been prescribed Nexium (esomeprazole), which is a proton pump inhibitor that helps reduce stomach acid and promote healing of the ulcer. Given this context, it is important to approach exercise with caution but also with an understanding of its benefits.
Can You Exercise with a Stomach Ulcer?
The short answer is yes, you can generally engage in exercise, including strength training, while managing a stomach ulcer, provided you take certain precautions. Exercise can actually be beneficial for your overall health, including improving circulation, enhancing mood, and supporting digestive health. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind:
1. Listen to Your Body: If you feel any discomfort or pain while exercising, it is crucial to stop and assess your condition. While light to moderate exercise is typically safe, intense workouts may exacerbate symptoms.
2. Type of Exercise: Low-impact exercises such as walking, cycling, and swimming are often recommended. Strength training can also be beneficial, but it is advisable to avoid heavy lifting or exercises that put excessive strain on the abdominal area. Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, dumbbell lifts, and planks can be performed, but ensure that you maintain proper form and avoid straining your core.
3. Timing of Exercise: It is generally best to avoid exercising immediately after meals, as this can lead to discomfort and may interfere with digestion. Allow some time for your food to settle before engaging in physical activity.
4. Diet and Hydration: Maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated are essential for healing. Avoid foods that can irritate the stomach lining, such as spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol. Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
5. Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Before starting any new exercise regimen, especially with a medical condition like a stomach ulcer, it is wise to consult your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health status and needs.
Conclusion
In summary, exercising with a stomach ulcer is generally safe, especially if you are mindful of your body's signals and choose appropriate types of exercise. Engaging in regular physical activity can contribute positively to your overall health and may even aid in the healing process. However, it is essential to listen to your body, avoid high-impact activities that could exacerbate your condition, and maintain a healthy diet. Always consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and to ensure that your exercise plan aligns with your treatment for the ulcer.
