Erection Issues After Circumcision: A Young Athlete's Concerns - Urology

Erectile dysfunction

Hello doctor, I recently had a circumcision and I have some questions.
During the recovery period, I understand that I should avoid erections for a month, but sometimes I experience nocturnal erections or feel aroused, and I only partially erect myself.
Will this affect my sexual function? Also, can young people experience organic or physiological erectile dysfunction? Sometimes I find it difficult to achieve an erection, lack sexual desire, or ejaculate quickly during masturbation, or I may ejaculate before achieving a full erection.
Could this be considered erectile dysfunction? I have seen doctors who say it’s psychological, so they haven’t conducted any tests or prescribed medication.
I do worry a lot, which makes me constantly think about getting an erection to check if there’s a problem or if I’m just fatigued.
To improve, should I try not to think about it? After a month post-circumcision, I plan to resume masturbation; should everything return to normal then? Do you have any other suggestions? The doctors at the hospital say there’s no issue, but I still have concerns.
I am an athlete, but I haven’t been able to exercise this month.
My diet is normal, I don’t smoke or drink, and I go to bed around 11 PM.
After circumcision, will the appearance of my penis look larger or longer because it was previously constricted? I am 177 cm tall and weigh 81 kg, with a flaccid length of 5 cm and an erect length of 10 cm.
Is this considered too short? What is the average erect length? After asking these questions, I hope to have a smooth sexual relationship with my girlfriend.

After circumcision, it is common for individuals to have concerns regarding their sexual function, including issues related to erection and libido. Your situation, as a young athlete who has recently undergone this procedure, is not uncommon, and it's important to address your concerns with a comprehensive understanding of both physiological and psychological factors.

Firstly, it is crucial to recognize that the healing process after circumcision can affect sexual function temporarily. During the initial recovery phase, which typically lasts about four to six weeks, it is advisable to avoid activities that may lead to erections, as you have been doing. This is to prevent any complications such as bleeding or infection at the surgical site. However, involuntary erections during sleep or at other times are normal and should not cause concern. These nocturnal erections are a natural physiological response and indicate that the erectile tissues are functioning properly.

Regarding your worries about erectile function and libido, it is essential to understand that psychological factors can significantly influence sexual performance. Anxiety about sexual performance, especially after a surgical procedure, can lead to a cycle of stress that may affect your ability to achieve or maintain an erection. This is often referred to as performance anxiety. It is not uncommon for young men, especially athletes who may be under pressure to perform, to experience fluctuations in libido and erectile function due to stress or anxiety.

You mentioned experiencing difficulty with erections and premature ejaculation. These issues can be multifactorial. While physical causes can contribute, such as hormonal imbalances or vascular issues, psychological factors often play a significant role, particularly in younger individuals. It is important to note that occasional difficulties with erections or changes in sexual desire do not necessarily indicate a permanent sexual dysfunction.
In terms of the physical aspects, the average erect penis size varies widely among individuals, and there is no "normal" size that applies universally. A range of 5 to 6 inches in length when erect is often cited as average, but many factors, including genetics and body type, contribute to this variability. Your reported sizes of 5 cm (approximately 2 inches) when flaccid and 10 cm (approximately 4 inches) when erect are on the lower end of the spectrum, but it is essential to remember that sexual satisfaction is not solely determined by size. Communication with your partner and mutual understanding are key components of a healthy sexual relationship.

As you recover from circumcision, it is advisable to focus on relaxation techniques and reducing anxiety related to sexual performance. Engaging in open communication with your partner about your concerns can also alleviate some of the pressure you may be feeling. If you continue to experience difficulties after your recovery period, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional specializing in sexual health. They can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential treatment options, which may include counseling or therapy to address psychological factors.

In summary, while it is natural to have concerns about sexual function following circumcision, many of these issues can be temporary and related to the healing process or psychological factors. Focus on your recovery, maintain open communication with your partner, and seek professional guidance if needed. With time and proper care, you should be able to resume your normal sexual activities and enjoy a fulfilling sexual relationship.
