Recurrent acute sinusitis
I experienced symptoms at the beginning of July and after taking two rounds of medication, the symptoms largely disappeared.
A few days after stopping the medication, I noticed fluid accumulation in the ear canal again, but without any other symptoms, so I did not return for a follow-up.
On July 31st (about half a month later), I noticed the symptoms again.
Could this be due to incomplete resolution of the fluid accumulation in the ear canal? If acute sinusitis is not treated with medication, are there alternative treatment options?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, acute sinusitis is often caused by bacterial infections and may lead to complications such as otitis media with effusion or acute otitis media.
It is recommended that if symptoms persist without improvement, you should continue to seek medical evaluation at an otolaryngology clinic.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Managing recurring acute sinusitis can be challenging, especially when symptoms persist or reoccur after initial treatment. In your case, it seems that you experienced a bout of acute sinusitis in early July, which was treated with medication, but you are now noticing symptoms again, including fluid in the ear canal. This situation raises several important points regarding the management of sinusitis and the potential for alternative treatments.
Acute sinusitis is often caused by viral infections, but it can also be triggered by bacterial infections or allergies. The inflammation of the sinus cavities can lead to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, and pressure, and it can also affect the Eustachian tubes, leading to fluid accumulation in the middle ear. This is likely what you are experiencing with the fluid in your ear canal. If the fluid does not resolve, it can lead to further complications, such as middle ear infections.
When it comes to treating acute sinusitis without medication, there are several non-pharmacological approaches that can be beneficial:
1. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or a neti pot can help clear mucus from the nasal passages and sinuses. This can reduce congestion and promote drainage, which is essential for recovery.
2. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water or taking a hot shower can help moisten the nasal passages and sinuses, making it easier to breathe and facilitating mucus drainage.
3. Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the face can help relieve sinus pressure and pain. The warmth can promote blood flow to the area, aiding in the healing process.
4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial. Drinking plenty of fluids helps thin mucus, making it easier for your body to expel it.
5. Humidifiers: Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, which can help soothe irritated nasal passages and sinuses.
6. Rest: Giving your body time to heal is essential. Adequate rest can boost your immune system and help your body fight off infections.
7. Avoiding Irritants: Staying away from smoke, strong odors, and allergens can help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend further evaluation to rule out any underlying issues, such as chronic sinusitis or structural problems in the nasal passages. In some cases, imaging studies like a CT scan may be necessary to assess the sinuses more thoroughly.
In conclusion, while there are several alternative methods to manage acute sinusitis without medication, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any worsening of your condition or if the fluid in your ear does not resolve, seeking medical attention is advisable. Your healthcare provider can offer tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation, ensuring that you receive the best care possible.
