Red Spots on the Breast: When to Seek Medical Advice - Breast and Thyroid

There is a small area of erythema and rash on the right breast?

Hello, doctor: I often feel anxious and worried about my chest, and I'm back again.
This time, the issue is located on the upper right side of my breast, above the areola, but not touching it.
There is a small red area about the size of a thumbprint, which looks like a rash.
However, there are also one or two tiny black spots within that area, and there is slight redness around those black dots.
It is neither painful nor itchy, and it hasn't been warm; it has been present for about a week, appearing before my menstrual period.
I have left it alone, and it hasn't faded or changed.
Could this be related to my tendency to have allergies and my body type that tends to sweat in hot and humid conditions? I always fear the worst and wonder what this could be.
Six months ago, I had an ultrasound, and the doctor said there was nothing wrong, advising me to check again in six months to a year.
Should I see a breast surgeon or a dermatologist? Thank you.

Based on your description, it seems more like an issue with the skin itself, so I recommend seeing a dermatologist first.

When it comes to red spots or any unusual changes on the breast, it is understandable to feel anxious, especially given the potential implications for breast health. The symptoms you describe—a small red area on the breast with tiny black dots, which has been present for about a week without pain, itching, or heat—can be concerning, but they may not necessarily indicate a serious condition.

Firstly, the appearance of red spots on the breast can be attributed to various causes, including benign skin conditions, allergic reactions, or even infections. Given that you mentioned a history of allergies and sweating, it's possible that the red area could be related to a mild dermatitis or an allergic reaction. Conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis can cause localized redness and irritation, especially in areas that are prone to sweating or friction.

The presence of small black dots could be indicative of several things, including clogged hair follicles or sebaceous glands, which can occur in areas of the skin that are subject to irritation or inflammation. These could also be small blackheads or even remnants of a previous skin condition that has resolved but left behind pigmentation.

Since you have had a breast ultrasound six months ago with no significant findings, it is reassuring that there were no alarming signs at that time. However, if the red area persists, changes in appearance, or if you develop additional symptoms such as pain, swelling, or discharge, it would be prudent to seek medical advice.

In terms of which specialist to consult, both a breast surgeon and a dermatologist could provide valuable insights. A breast surgeon can evaluate any potential breast-related issues, while a dermatologist can assess the skin condition more thoroughly. Given your symptoms, starting with a dermatologist might be beneficial, as they can address the skin aspect and determine if there is a need for further evaluation by a breast specialist.

In summary, while the symptoms you describe may not immediately suggest a serious condition, it is always best to err on the side of caution. If the red area does not improve or if you have any new concerns, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Regular monitoring and open communication with your healthcare provider are key to maintaining breast health. Remember, early detection and intervention are crucial in addressing any potential issues.
