Sudden skin redness and swelling?
Doctor: Hello.
This morning, I broke off some excess branches from a sycamore tree next to my balcony because they were affecting the light.
I did this manually without gloves or power tools for convenience.
During the process, I felt a large branch sweep across my right arm, causing scratches and a stinging sensation.
I didn't pay much attention to it at the time.
However, thirty minutes later, the symptoms worsened, and the stinging became more pronounced, similar to being stung by an insect, and it didn't alleviate.
I still didn't think much of it.
By 8:00 PM, I noticed a long red rash on my arm that looked somewhat like an abrasion, and there was still pain.
An hour ago, I suddenly felt an itch on my arm, and when I turned on the light, the originally stinging red rash had transformed into swollen lumps resembling mosquito bites, which were very itchy.
It seems the lumps have increased in size.
Could you please tell me what the cause of this is? Is there any danger? Thank you.

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is causing significant distress, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.
A proper examination is necessary to understand the problem and to determine the appropriate treatment.

More Info
Sudden skin redness and swelling, especially following an incident like the one you described, can be attributed to several potential causes. Based on your account, it seems likely that you are experiencing a form of allergic reaction or irritant dermatitis, possibly exacerbated by physical trauma from the tree branches.
When you encountered the tree branches, the initial scratching and irritation could have triggered a localized inflammatory response. This response can manifest as redness, swelling, and itching, which are classic signs of inflammation. The fact that you experienced a progression from pain to itching and the development of hives-like bumps suggests that your body may be reacting to something on the tree branches, such as plant oils, allergens, or even small particles that could have penetrated the skin.
Possible Causes:
1. Contact Dermatitis: This is an allergic reaction that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen. In your case, the tree branches may have contained substances that your skin reacted to, leading to inflammation and the development of hives.
2. Physical Irritation: The mechanical action of the branches scraping against your skin could have caused irritation, leading to localized inflammation. This irritation can sometimes trigger a more pronounced allergic response in sensitive individuals.
3. Insect Reaction: If there were any insects on the branches, such as ants or wasps, their bites could also cause similar symptoms. The initial pain and subsequent swelling could be indicative of an insect sting or bite.
4. Infection: If the branches caused any breaks in the skin, there is a risk of infection, which can also lead to redness, swelling, and pain. However, this is less likely if you did not notice any open wounds.
Risks and Recommendations:
- Immediate Care: Since you are experiencing significant itching and swelling, it is advisable to wash the affected area with mild soap and water to remove any potential irritants. Applying a cool compress can help soothe the area and reduce swelling.
- Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or antihistamines can be effective in managing itching and inflammation. If the symptoms persist or worsen, it may be necessary to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.
- Monitoring Symptoms: Keep an eye on the affected area for signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or pus. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
- Avoiding Future Reactions: In the future, consider wearing protective clothing, such as gloves and long sleeves, when handling plants or performing yard work to minimize the risk of skin irritation or allergic reactions.
When to Seek Medical Attention:
If you experience any of the following, seek medical care immediately:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
- Severe pain or worsening symptoms
- Signs of infection, such as fever or pus
In summary, while your symptoms may be concerning, they are often manageable with appropriate care. Understanding the potential causes can help you take preventive measures in the future and seek timely treatment if necessary. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
