Will this lead to pregnancy?

Hello doctor: I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on August 20.
We first rubbed against each other through our underwear, and during intercourse, he wore a condom the entire time.
However, there was some moisture during the rubbing.
I'm not sure if it was from me or my boyfriend.
We also checked for any holes in the condom afterward, and there were none.
Is it possible for me to get pregnant from this? Thank you.

W, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/08/20

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even without ejaculation during intercourse, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
The failure rate of correctly using condoms throughout intercourse is still around 5%.
As long as there are active sperm in the vagina during the ovulation period, there remains a chance of pregnancy, regardless of the amount of fluid or whether there are any holes in the condom.
It is generally not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
I suggest considering emergency contraception, and if your period is a week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to the question of whether you could get pregnant from dry humping and safe sex practices, it's important to understand the mechanics of how pregnancy occurs and the factors involved in your specific situation.

First, let's clarify what dry humping is. Dry humping typically involves rubbing against each other while fully clothed, which can lead to sexual arousal but does not involve penetration. The primary concern with dry humping is the potential transfer of bodily fluids, particularly pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) from the male partner. This fluid can contain sperm, although the concentration is generally lower than that found in ejaculate.

In your case, you mentioned that there was some moisture during the dry humping, but you were also using a condom during penetrative sex. If the moisture you felt was from either you or your boyfriend, it is possible that it contained some sperm, but the risk of pregnancy from dry humping alone is quite low, especially if there was no direct genital-to-genital contact and no ejaculation occurred.

The use of a condom during penetrative sex is a significant factor in reducing the risk of pregnancy. Condoms are designed to prevent sperm from entering the vagina, and when used correctly, they are highly effective at preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You mentioned that you checked the condom for any holes or breakage, which is a good practice. If the condom was intact throughout the entire sexual encounter, the likelihood of pregnancy is very low.

However, it’s essential to consider a few additional points:
1. Timing of Ovulation: If you are tracking your menstrual cycle, understanding your ovulation period is crucial. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period, and this is when you are most fertile. If you had sexual contact during your fertile window, the risk of pregnancy increases, but since you used a condom, this risk is mitigated.

2. Pre-ejaculate Fluid: While pre-ejaculate can contain sperm, the amount is usually minimal. The risk of pregnancy from pre-ejaculate is significantly lower than from ejaculate. If there was no direct contact between the penis and the vagina, the risk remains low.

3. Hygiene and Cleaning: If there was any moisture on the outside of the condom or your clothing, it is unlikely to lead to pregnancy unless sperm were directly deposited near the vaginal opening. Washing the area afterward can further reduce any risk.

4. Anxiety and Stress: It’s common to feel anxious about potential pregnancy, especially after intimate encounters. If you are concerned about pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late. This can provide peace of mind.

In conclusion, based on the information you provided, the chances of becoming pregnant from the activities you described are very low, especially since you used a condom during penetrative sex and checked for any issues with it. If you have further concerns or if your period is late, consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and possibly a pregnancy test would be a prudent next step. Remember, open communication with your partner about sexual health and contraception is key to a healthy sexual relationship.
