Foreskin issues
Hello doctor, recently when I was cleaning my genital area and pulled down my foreskin, I experienced a sharp pain.
I noticed a red area on the inside of the foreskin that seems to be bleeding.
How should I handle this? I haven't encountered this before.
Thank you for your response.

Hello: If it is at the bottom, it is possible that it was not cleaned properly in the past, and now the original adhesive area has separated, leading to a red, sore feeling.
The general principles for wound care are to minimize water exposure, focus on cleaning, and keep the area dry.
The wound should improve in 3-5 days.
Of course, it is best to see a doctor when possible, as they can provide recommendations if needed.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
When experiencing painful symptoms related to the foreskin, such as sharp pain during retraction and the presence of redness or bleeding, it is essential to approach the situation with care. Here’s a comprehensive understanding of the potential causes and management strategies for your symptoms.
Possible Causes
1. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) and can extend to the foreskin. It often presents with redness, swelling, and pain. Balanitis can be caused by infections (bacterial or fungal), poor hygiene, or irritants such as soaps or lotions.
2. Phimosis: This condition occurs when the foreskin cannot be fully retracted over the glans. It can lead to pain during attempts to retract the foreskin and may cause inflammation or infection.
3. Frenulum Tears: The frenulum is the band of tissue on the underside of the penis that connects the glans to the shaft. If this area is tight or if there has been friction, it can tear, leading to sharp pain and bleeding.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause inflammation and pain in the genital area. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and discharge.
5. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, reactions to personal care products, latex condoms, or lubricants can cause irritation and pain.
Management Strategies
1. Gentle Cleaning: Ensure that you are cleaning the area gently with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh soaps or chemicals that can irritate the skin.
2. Topical Treatments: If the redness and pain are due to inflammation, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation. However, consult a healthcare provider before applying any topical medication.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any products that may be causing irritation. This includes soaps, lotions, or even certain fabrics.
4. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the area can help soothe discomfort and promote healing.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given that you have noticed bleeding and persistent pain, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, possibly conduct tests to rule out infections or other conditions, and provide appropriate treatment.
6. Consider Circumcision: If phimosis is diagnosed and is causing recurrent issues, circumcision may be recommended as a long-term solution.
When to Seek Immediate Care
- If you experience severe pain that does not improve with home care.
- If there is significant bleeding or discharge that is unusual.
- If you develop fever or other systemic symptoms, which may indicate an infection.
Conclusion
Painful symptoms related to the foreskin can arise from various causes, and while some may resolve with simple home care, others may require medical intervention. It is essential to approach this issue with sensitivity and seek professional guidance to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, maintaining good hygiene and being aware of any changes in your body are key to preventing and managing such conditions effectively.
