Postoperative issues related to lipomas?
Hello Doctor, I had surgery to remove two lipomas from my back, and today is the 11th day post-operation.
I just had my stitches removed, but the area around both surgical wounds feels numb, and I hardly feel anything when I touch it.
Is this normal? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Xu Kaixi reply Surgery
During surgery, the superficial nerves may be affected when the skin is incised, leading to abnormal sensations or numbness around the wound.
This is a normal phenomenon and will improve over time.

More Info
After undergoing surgery to remove lipomas, experiencing numbness or a tingling sensation around the surgical site can be a common occurrence. This phenomenon is often due to nerve irritation or damage that may occur during the surgical procedure. When the surgeon makes an incision to remove the lipoma, they may inadvertently disturb nearby nerves, leading to temporary numbness or altered sensation in the surrounding area.
In your case, since it has been 11 days post-surgery and you have just had your stitches removed, it is not unusual to feel some numbness or tingling. This is typically a result of the healing process. As the tissues heal, the nerves may gradually recover, and sensation should return over time. However, the duration of this numbness can vary from person to person. In many cases, it resolves within a few weeks to a few months, but some individuals may experience prolonged numbness, especially if the nerve was significantly affected during the procedure.
It is important to monitor your symptoms closely. If the numbness persists beyond a few weeks, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or discharge from the incision site), you should reach out to your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate the surgical site to ensure that there are no complications, such as nerve entrapment or infection.
In terms of post-operative care, it is advisable to follow your surgeon's instructions regarding wound care and activity restrictions. Gentle movements and avoiding excessive strain on the area can help facilitate healing. If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief medications may be beneficial, but always consult your doctor before taking any medication.
In summary, while numbness after lipoma removal can be concerning, it is often a normal part of the healing process. Keep an eye on your symptoms, and do not hesitate to contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or if your symptoms change. They can provide you with the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
