Delayed menstruation?

Hello doctor, my last menstrual period started on September 13 and ended on September 17.
I was supposed to get my period this month on October 10, but today is the 13th and it still hasn't arrived.
On October 6, we used a condom but pulled out halfway.
I also used my hand for stimulation.
Could I be pregnant? Or could drinking cold beverages be causing my period to be late? My boyfriend also touched me with his hands; is there a possibility of pregnancy from that?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/10/13

Understanding delayed menstruation can be a source of anxiety and confusion, especially when it comes to concerns about pregnancy. Based on your timeline, if your last menstrual period started on September 13 and ended on September 17, you would typically expect your next period around October 10. Since it is now October 13 and you have not yet menstruated, it is understandable to wonder about the possibility of pregnancy.

First, let's address the potential for pregnancy based on the sexual activity you described. You mentioned that you used a condom but withdrew before ejaculation. This method, known as withdrawal or "pulling out," can reduce the risk of pregnancy, but it is not foolproof. Pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, and if any sperm were present, there is a possibility of pregnancy. Additionally, if your boyfriend touched you and then you had any genital contact, there is a slight risk of sperm transfer, although this is generally considered low.

Regarding the concern about drinking cold beverages affecting your menstrual cycle, there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that consuming cold drinks can delay menstruation. Menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, exercise, and overall health. If you are experiencing stress or anxiety about the possibility of pregnancy, this could also contribute to a delayed period.

If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, the most reliable way to confirm or rule out pregnancy is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. It is best to wait until at least the first day of your missed period for the most accurate results, but some tests can detect pregnancy a few days before your expected period.

If the test is positive, or if you continue to experience a delayed period along with other symptoms such as nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue, it would be advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide you with more information on your options and what to expect moving forward.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy based on your description, it is essential to take a pregnancy test for confirmation. Factors such as stress and hormonal changes can also contribute to a delayed period. If you have further concerns or if your period does not arrive soon, consulting with a healthcare professional is a good next step. They can help you navigate your concerns and provide support tailored to your situation.
