Genital issues

Hello doctor, I am 20 years old and recently noticed that one side of my labia minora has shrunk significantly.
I became a bit anxious and researched a lot, but I didn't find anything like leukoplakia mentioned online.
Is this normal?

Alva, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/10/14

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the labia minora often appear asymmetrical, with one side sometimes being less prominent or particularly larger.
The labia can change due to hormonal influences, aging, weight fluctuations, and endocrine status after birth; however, they typically become more defined after puberty.
Generally, variations in labial size do not require special treatment.
However, some individuals may experience psychological discomfort or physical discomfort while walking or dressing.
In some cases, prominent labia may rub against clothing, leading to chronic skin inflammation.
If necessary, a minor surgical procedure can be performed to improve the situation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

At the age of 20, it is not uncommon for individuals to notice changes in their bodies, including the labia. The labia, which are the folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening, can undergo various changes due to hormonal fluctuations, weight changes, and even normal anatomical variations.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the appearance and size of the labia can vary significantly from person to person. Some women may have larger or smaller labia, and these can change over time due to factors such as puberty, hormonal changes, and aging. It is also possible for one side of the labia to appear different from the other, which is completely normal.
If you have noticed that one side of your labia has become smaller, it may not be a cause for concern, especially if there are no accompanying symptoms such as pain, itching, or unusual discharge. Changes in the labia can occur due to a variety of reasons, including:
1. Hormonal Changes: Hormones play a significant role in the development and appearance of the labia. Fluctuations in estrogen levels, particularly during menstrual cycles, can lead to changes in the size and shape of the labia.

2. Weight Changes: Weight loss or gain can affect the appearance of the labia. For instance, weight loss may lead to a reduction in the fatty tissue around the labia, making them appear smaller.

3. Normal Anatomical Variation: Just as every person has unique features, the labia can vary widely in size and shape. It is normal for one labium to be larger or smaller than the other.

4. Injury or Trauma: If there has been any recent trauma or injury to the area, it could lead to swelling or changes in size.
5. Skin Conditions: While you mentioned that you do not have any signs of white patches or other concerning symptoms, it is worth noting that certain skin conditions can affect the labia. However, these typically present with additional symptoms such as itching, redness, or discomfort.

If you are feeling anxious about the changes you are experiencing, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and provide reassurance or further evaluation if necessary.
In summary, changes in the labia, including size variations, can be completely normal, especially at your age. As long as there are no concerning symptoms, it is likely that what you are experiencing is within the range of normal anatomical variation. However, if you have any doubts or if the changes are accompanied by discomfort or other symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Your health and peace of mind are important, and a healthcare professional can provide you with the guidance you need.
