Post-hemorrhoidectomy care?

Hello doctor, I had surgery for internal and external moles over two months ago.
There is a small skin tag about the size of a soybean at the anal area.
The surgeon advised against any treatment, but for the past couple of days, the skin tag has been slightly itchy and painful when pressed.
I'm unsure how to handle this.
Would applying hemorrhoid cream be helpful? Thank you.

After surgery for larger hemorrhoids, it is common to have some residual skin tags.
If there is no discomfort, it is generally not recommended to treat them.
For mild itching, topical ointments can be applied.
Additionally, avoiding constipation and shortening the time spent during bowel movements can also be beneficial.

More Info

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience discomfort or the formation of skin tags around the anal area. These skin tags, often referred to as "tags" or "piles," can occur as a result of the surgical procedure or due to the natural healing process of the skin. In your case, the presence of a small skin tag that is causing itching and slight pain is something that can be managed with appropriate care.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that skin tags are generally benign and do not pose a significant health risk. However, they can become irritated, especially if they are located in an area that experiences friction or pressure. The itching and discomfort you are experiencing may be due to irritation or inflammation of the skin tag.
Here are some steps you can take to manage the discomfort:
1. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene in the anal area. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubs that can irritate the skin further.

2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams or ointments may provide relief from itching and discomfort. These products often contain ingredients like hydrocortisone, witch hazel, or lidocaine, which can help reduce inflammation and numb the area. However, it is crucial to use these products as directed and consult your doctor if you have any concerns about their use.

3. Avoid Irritants: Be cautious about what you apply to the area. Avoid using any products that may cause irritation, such as scented wipes or creams that are not specifically designed for sensitive skin.

4. Diet and Hydration: Ensure you are consuming a high-fiber diet and staying well-hydrated to prevent constipation, which can put additional strain on the anal area and exacerbate discomfort.

5. Warm Sitz Baths: Taking warm sitz baths can help soothe the area and promote healing. Soaking in warm water for about 10-15 minutes several times a day can provide relief from discomfort and help reduce inflammation.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the skin tag and any associated symptoms. If the itching and pain persist or worsen, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it is essential to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

7. Follow-Up with Your Surgeon: Since your surgeon advised against further treatment of the skin tag, it is advisable to follow their guidance. However, if the discomfort continues, you may want to schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your symptoms and explore potential options for management or removal if necessary.

In summary, while skin tags can be bothersome after hemorrhoid surgery, they are typically not a cause for concern. By maintaining good hygiene, using appropriate topical treatments, and monitoring your symptoms, you can manage the discomfort effectively. If you have any doubts or if the situation does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and care.
