In the past few days, a raised white lesion has appeared on the side of my tongue?
This has been present for 3 to 4 days, and it doesn't hurt or cause any other issues on the side of the tongue.
Is this normal, or will it disappear in a few days? I have attached a picture for reference.
Could you please advise what this issue might be?

More Info
The appearance of a white bump on the side of your tongue can be concerning, but it's important to understand that there are several potential causes for this condition. Based on the information provided, it seems that the bump has been present for 3 to 4 days without pain or any other accompanying symptoms. This is a crucial detail, as it can help narrow down the possible causes.
One common cause of a white bump on the tongue is a benign condition known as a "mucocele." Mucoceles are fluid-filled cysts that can occur when a salivary gland is blocked or damaged. They often appear as painless bumps and can resolve on their own over time. Another possibility is a "lie bump," which is a small, inflamed bump that can occur on the tongue due to irritation or trauma, such as biting the tongue or consuming hot or spicy foods. These bumps are usually harmless and may also resolve without treatment.
Another potential cause could be oral thrush, a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. This condition is characterized by white patches or bumps in the mouth, including the tongue. Oral thrush can be more common in individuals with weakened immune systems or those who use inhaled corticosteroids. If the bump is accompanied by other symptoms, such as soreness, difficulty swallowing, or a persistent white coating on the tongue, it may warrant further investigation.
In some cases, a white bump could indicate a more serious condition, such as leukoplakia or oral lichen planus. Leukoplakia is characterized by thickened white patches in the mouth that cannot be scraped off and may be associated with irritation or tobacco use. Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can cause white, lacy patches in the mouth and may be associated with stress or autoimmune disorders.
Given that the bump has been present for a few days without pain or other symptoms, it may not be an immediate cause for concern. However, it is essential to monitor the bump for any changes in size, color, or associated symptoms. If the bump persists beyond two weeks, changes in appearance, or if you develop additional symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or swelling, it is advisable to seek dental advice.
In summary, while the white bump on your tongue may be benign and could resolve on its own, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you have any concerns or if the bump does not improve, consulting with a dentist or an oral specialist is recommended. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging or biopsy if necessary, to determine the exact cause of the bump and recommend appropriate treatment if needed. Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding irritants, and ensuring a balanced diet can also contribute to overall oral health and may help prevent similar issues in the future.
