Consultation on Phenomena After Eye Movement
Dear Dr.
Gao,
I would like to inquire about a phenomenon related to eye movement.
When I turn my eyes to the right to the maximum limit, I experience flashes of light accompanied by popping sounds; however, this does not occur when I move my eyes upward, downward, or to the left.
Currently, I do not have any discomfort or vision impairment.
I would like to ask you:
1.
Based on your experience and opinion, what could be the most likely condition or phenomenon related to my situation?
2.
Following up on the above, will this condition or phenomenon affect my vision or cause any damage?
3.
What would be the best course of action for me at this moment? (For example: seek immediate medical attention or continue to monitor)
Thank you, Dr.
Gao.

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Ah-Hsiang:
First of all, moving the eyes to the extreme left and right is not a good eye movement and should be avoided.
When the eyes reach their limits, there can be pressure, and sometimes light may be perceived.
Intraocular pressure may also increase at times.
I cannot determine the source of the sound; it may be due to friction between the extraocular muscles and surrounding tissues.
This situation should not cause any harm to the eyes; just observe and avoid extreme movements.

I hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

Hello, and thank you for your inquiry regarding the phenomena of flashing lights and sounds associated with eye movement. Your description of experiencing a flash of light and a popping sound when turning your eyes to the right is indeed intriguing and warrants careful consideration.
1. Possible Conditions or Phenomena: Based on your description, the phenomenon you are experiencing could be related to a few potential causes. The flashing lights you see when you turn your eyes to the right may be indicative of a condition known as "photopsia," which is often associated with the vitreous gel in the eye pulling on the retina. This can occur in individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) or those who have experienced changes in the vitreous body, such as posterior vitreous detachment. The accompanying sound, which you describe as a "popping" noise, could potentially be attributed to the movement of the eye muscles or the surrounding tissues. Some experts suggest that this sound may arise from the tension or friction between the eye muscles and the surrounding structures, although this is less commonly reported.
2. Impact on Vision: In terms of whether this condition could affect your vision, it is essential to note that while flashes of light can be benign, they can also be a warning sign of more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments. If the flashes are persistent or accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow in your vision, or significant visual changes, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. However, if your eye examinations have consistently shown no signs of retinal damage or other abnormalities, it is less likely that your current symptoms will lead to vision loss.
3. Recommended Actions: Given that you have not experienced any discomfort or significant vision changes, it may be reasonable to monitor your symptoms for now. However, I would recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment with an eye care professional, particularly if the symptoms persist or worsen. It is essential to have a thorough examination, including a dilated fundus examination, to rule out any underlying issues that may not be apparent during a standard eye exam. If you notice any new symptoms, such as a sudden increase in flashes, floaters, or any changes in your visual field, you should seek immediate medical attention.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may not currently indicate a serious condition, it is always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to eye health. Regular check-ups with an eye care professional can help ensure that any potential issues are identified and managed early. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out for more information. Your eye health is paramount, and staying informed is a crucial part of maintaining it.
