Itchy nipples may cause pain when pressure is applied?
After my menstrual period, I feel itching on my left nipple, and I even scratched it until it bled.
There is no discharge, but when I press on the left side of my chest, it hurts; however, it doesn't hurt when I don't press.
What could this problem be? It's only on the left side; the right side is fine.

Although breast pain can be related to many causes, the primary reason is often linked to the menstrual cycle.
However, if you are concerned about any issues with your breasts, it is advisable to visit a specialist for an examination.

Itchy and painful sensations in the nipple, particularly when localized to one side, can be concerning and may arise from various causes. Given your description of experiencing itching, skin irritation, and localized pain in the left nipple after your menstrual period, there are several potential explanations to consider.
1. Hormonal Changes: The menstrual cycle can lead to fluctuations in hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes can affect breast tissue, leading to tenderness, swelling, or itching. It is not uncommon for women to experience breast sensitivity or discomfort around the time of their period, and this can sometimes persist even after menstruation has ended.
2. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: The skin around the nipple can become irritated due to various factors, including the use of new soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents. Allergic reactions to materials in clothing, such as synthetic fabrics or dyes, can also cause localized itching and discomfort. If you have recently changed any products that come into contact with your skin, consider reverting to your previous products to see if symptoms improve.
3. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as mastitis (an infection of the breast tissue) or other inflammatory processes can cause localized pain and discomfort. Although mastitis is more common in breastfeeding women, it can occur in others as well. Symptoms may include redness, warmth, and swelling in addition to pain. If you notice any signs of infection, such as fever or discharge, it is important to seek medical attention.
4. Dermatological Issues: Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis can lead to itching and irritation of the nipple area. If you have a history of skin issues, this may be a contributing factor. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan if a skin condition is suspected.
5. Fibrocystic Changes: Many women experience fibrocystic breast changes, which can cause lumps, tenderness, and sometimes itching. These changes are often benign and related to hormonal fluctuations. If you feel any lumps or notice significant changes in your breast tissue, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.
6. Nerve Irritation: Sometimes, nerve irritation or entrapment in the thoracic region can lead to referred pain in the breast area. This is less common but can occur, especially if there is a history of trauma or repetitive strain in the upper body.
Given that you are experiencing localized pain only on the left side, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the itching persists, worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as discharge, significant swelling, or systemic symptoms (like fever), it would be prudent to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies or other tests if necessary to rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while the symptoms you describe could be related to hormonal changes or irritation, it is crucial to remain vigilant and consult a healthcare professional if your symptoms do not resolve or if they worsen. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind.
