There is a crackling sound in the ear?
Two weeks ago, after experiencing tonsillitis, I noticed a crackling sound or a sensation of water in my ear when I touch the area around my ear, yawn, or occasionally when I turn my head or move.
Initially, I thought there was a foreign object in my ear, but the doctor said there was no foreign body, just nerve sensitivity.
They advised me to relax! However, I find this quite bothersome.
Should I seek another consultation?

If discomfort persists, you will need to return for follow-up examinations.

More Info
Understanding ear noises, often referred to as tinnitus, can be a perplexing experience, especially when accompanied by sensations like fullness or pressure in the ear. Based on your description, it seems that your symptoms began following an episode of tonsillitis, which can sometimes lead to referred sensations in the ear due to the interconnected nature of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) system.
Causes of Ear Noises
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize ear pressure. Inflammation from tonsillitis can affect this tube, leading to sensations of fullness or sounds like water in the ear. When you yawn or touch the area around your ear, you may be inadvertently opening or closing this tube, which can create sounds or sensations.
2. Tinnitus: This is a common condition characterized by hearing noises that are not caused by external sounds. It can manifest as ringing, buzzing, or even a sensation of fullness. Tinnitus can be triggered by various factors, including exposure to loud noises, ear infections, or even stress and anxiety.
3. Muscle Spasms: The muscles in the middle ear can sometimes spasm, causing sounds that may feel like clicking or popping. This can be exacerbated by stress or tension, which might explain the advice to relax.
4. Fluid in the Ear: Sometimes, following an upper respiratory infection or inflammation, fluid can accumulate in the middle ear, leading to a sensation of fullness and sounds that resemble water sloshing around.
When to Seek Help
Given that your symptoms have persisted and are causing you distress, it may be beneficial to seek further evaluation. Here are some considerations:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the sounds or sensations in your ear continue or worsen, it’s advisable to consult an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including hearing tests and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any underlying conditions.
- Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as pain, significant hearing loss, dizziness, or balance issues, these warrant immediate medical attention.
- Quality of Life: If the noises are affecting your daily life or causing anxiety, seeking help is important. There are various management strategies for tinnitus, including sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and relaxation techniques.
Self-Care and Management
In the meantime, here are some self-care strategies you can consider:
- Relaxation Techniques: Since stress can exacerbate ear symptoms, practices such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga may help alleviate your discomfort.
- Avoid Loud Noises: Protect your ears from loud environments, as this can worsen tinnitus or ear discomfort.
- Stay Hydrated: Adequate hydration can help maintain mucosal health in the Eustachian tube and may assist in reducing feelings of fullness.
- Monitor Allergies: If you have a history of allergies, managing them effectively can also help reduce inflammation in the Eustachian tube and surrounding areas.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to the recent tonsillitis and could be benign, it’s essential to monitor them closely. If they persist or worsen, don’t hesitate to seek further medical advice. An ENT specialist can provide a comprehensive evaluation and tailored management plan to help alleviate your concerns.
