Forgot to take the birth control pill?
I forgot to take my medication on November 21 and took it normally on November 22, but I forgot to make up for the missed dose.
Is there a way to remedy this? I have four pills left in this pack, or should I just start a new pack when my next period begins?

When you miss a birth control pill, it can be concerning, especially if you're trying to avoid pregnancy. Here’s a detailed guide on what to do next based on your situation.
First, it’s important to understand the type of birth control pill you are using. There are two main types: combination pills (which contain both estrogen and progestin) and progestin-only pills (often referred to as the "mini-pill"). The steps to take after missing a pill can vary slightly depending on which type you are using.
1. What to Do After Missing a Pill:
- Combination Pills: If you miss one pill, take it as soon as you remember. If you remember on the same day, you can take both the missed pill and the current pill together. If you miss two pills in a row, take the most recent missed pill as soon as you remember and discard the other missed pill. Continue taking the remaining pills as scheduled. However, you should use backup contraception (like condoms) for the next seven days to ensure protection against pregnancy.
- Progestin-Only Pills: These pills need to be taken at the same time every day. If you miss a pill by more than three hours, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and use backup contraception for the next 48 hours.
2. What About the Remaining Pills?
Since you mentioned that you have four pills left in your pack, you should continue taking them as scheduled. Do not skip them or start a new pack until you finish the current one. If you are unsure about your protection status after missing pills, using a backup method is advisable.
3. Starting a New Pack:
If your next period starts while you still have pills left in your current pack, you can finish the remaining pills and then start a new pack as usual. If you are concerned about the effectiveness of your current pack due to missed pills, you might want to consult with your healthcare provider about whether to start a new pack immediately or wait until your next cycle.
4. Monitoring for Pregnancy:
If you had unprotected intercourse during the time you missed your pills, there is a possibility of pregnancy. If your period is late or you experience unusual symptoms, consider taking a pregnancy test. If you have any doubts or concerns, it’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
5. Preventing Future Misses:
To avoid missing pills in the future, consider setting a daily reminder on your phone or using a pill organizer. Some people find it helpful to take their pill at the same time as another daily routine, such as brushing their teeth.
6. Consulting Your Healthcare Provider:
If you find yourself frequently forgetting to take your pills or if you have concerns about the effectiveness of your birth control method, it may be worth discussing alternative contraceptive options with your healthcare provider. There are many effective methods available, including IUDs, implants, and injections, which may suit your lifestyle better.
In summary, you can take the missed pill as soon as you remember and continue with the remaining pills in your pack. Use backup contraception if you've missed multiple pills or had unprotected intercourse. Always consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and to address any concerns you may have regarding your birth control method.
