Inability to fully open the mouth?
Hello: My right jaw joint hurts so much that I can't fully open my mouth, can't yawn, and can't eat large foods.
I don't know if it's nerve inflammation.
I have tried taking Tylenol for pain relief, but it still hasn't helped.
Please, doctor, help me! A helpless patient.

Based on your description, it seems to be temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation, most commonly caused by dental malocclusion, which may require a dental examination.
For now, focus on alleviating the pain by minimizing oral activity.
Avoid biting hard foods and refrain from lateral and anterior-posterior jaw movements.
Additionally, consider stronger analgesics and avoid massaging the joint area; improvement should be expected within 3 to 5 days.

More Info
Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing significant discomfort and limitations with your jaw, which can be quite distressing. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for your inability to fully open your mouth and the associated pain. Let's explore these possibilities and discuss some strategies for relief.
Possible Causes
1. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ): This is one of the most common reasons for jaw pain and restricted movement. TMJ disorders can arise from various factors, including jaw misalignment, teeth grinding (bruxism), or stress. Symptoms often include pain around the jaw joint, difficulty opening the mouth, and clicking or popping sounds when moving the jaw.
2. Muscle Spasms: The muscles that control jaw movement can become tense or spasm due to stress, overuse, or injury. This can lead to pain and restricted movement, making it difficult to open your mouth fully.
3. Nerve Issues: Inflammation or irritation of the nerves that supply the jaw can lead to pain and dysfunction. Conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia can cause severe facial pain, although it typically presents differently than what you describe.
4. Infection or Inflammation: If there is an infection in the gums or teeth, particularly around the wisdom teeth, it can lead to swelling and pain that restricts jaw movement.
5. Dental Issues: Problems such as impacted wisdom teeth or other dental infections can also lead to pain and difficulty opening the mouth.
Management Strategies
1. Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress to the affected area can help relax the muscles and alleviate pain. Try using a warm towel or a heating pad for 15-20 minutes several times a day.
2. Pain Relief Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce inflammation and pain. If you find that these are not effective, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for stronger medications or muscle relaxants.
3. Gentle Jaw Exercises: Once the pain begins to subside, gentle stretching and relaxation exercises for the jaw can help improve mobility. However, it is crucial to avoid any movements that cause pain.
4. Avoid Hard Foods: Stick to softer foods that require less chewing to minimize strain on your jaw.
5. Stress Management: If stress is contributing to muscle tension, consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.
6. Dental Evaluation: If symptoms persist, it is essential to see a dentist or an oral and maxillofacial specialist. They can evaluate for any underlying dental issues, such as impacted teeth or TMJ disorders, and recommend appropriate treatment.
7. Physical Therapy: In some cases, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist can provide specific exercises and treatments to help improve jaw function and reduce pain.
When to Seek Help
If your symptoms do not improve with home management or if you experience severe pain, swelling, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, possibly including imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend a tailored treatment plan.
In summary, while your symptoms are concerning, there are several strategies you can employ to manage your pain and improve your jaw function. However, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
