Burning sensation in the right elbow?
Hello, doctor.
For the past two weeks, I have been experiencing a burning sensation on the inner side of my right elbow, even though there has been no injury.
Wearing long-sleeved clothing exacerbates the burning and stabbing pain, and at times, I also feel a nerve-like pain.
Since I have previously undergone carpal tunnel release and ulnar nerve decompression surgery on my left hand, the discomfort in my right hand feels similar to nerve pain.
Could you please help me understand the cause of this burning and stabbing sensation? Thank you.
Xiu Ying, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/12/06
Dr. Cai Zongzhang reply Neurology
Hello, generally speaking, having undergone carpal tunnel release and ulnar nerve decompression surgery on the left hand should not affect the right hand.
It is recommended that you visit a neurologist for further evaluation.

The burning sensation you are experiencing in your right elbow, especially given that there has been no injury, can be attributed to several potential causes. Understanding these causes is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment and management strategies.
1. Nerve Compression or Irritation: Given your history of left-hand surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve decompression, it's possible that you may be experiencing similar issues on the right side. The ulnar nerve runs along the inner side of the elbow (often referred to as the "funny bone" area) and can become compressed or irritated, leading to symptoms such as burning, tingling, or pain. This condition is known as cubital tunnel syndrome, which occurs when the ulnar nerve is compressed at the elbow.
2. Repetitive Strain Injury: If you engage in activities that require repetitive motion of the elbow or wrist, such as typing, playing sports, or lifting, you may develop a repetitive strain injury. This can lead to inflammation of the tendons and surrounding tissues, causing pain and a burning sensation. Conditions such as medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow) could also be a factor.
3. Radiculopathy: Sometimes, nerve pain can originate from the neck due to a herniated disc or cervical radiculopathy. If a nerve root in the cervical spine is compressed, it can cause pain, tingling, or burning sensations that radiate down the arm to the elbow.
4. Peripheral Neuropathy: Conditions such as diabetes or vitamin deficiencies can lead to peripheral neuropathy, which may present as burning sensations, tingling, or numbness in the extremities. If you have any underlying health conditions, it might be worth discussing these with your healthcare provider.
5. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or tendinitis can cause localized inflammation around the elbow joint, leading to pain and discomfort. If you notice swelling or stiffness in addition to the burning sensation, this could be a possibility.
6. Other Causes: Less commonly, conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) or infections could lead to burning sensations. However, these are typically accompanied by other significant symptoms.
Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the complexity of your symptoms and your medical history, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a neurologist or an orthopedic specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies or nerve conduction studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
- Physical Therapy: If nerve compression or repetitive strain is diagnosed, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the muscles around the elbow and improve flexibility, which may alleviate symptoms.
- Ergonomic Adjustments: If your activities involve repetitive motions, consider making ergonomic adjustments to your workspace or activities to reduce strain on your elbow.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. However, consult your doctor before starting any new medication.
- Lifestyle Modifications: If you have any underlying conditions such as diabetes, managing those effectively can help reduce symptoms of neuropathy.
In conclusion, while the burning sensation in your right elbow may be concerning, understanding the potential causes can help guide you toward effective management strategies. It is essential to seek professional medical advice to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.
