Abnormal bleeding
Hello Doctor, I have a habit of taking oral contraceptive pills.
Since I switched to the brand X during my menstrual period (starting on November 22, 2019), the amount of bleeding has become very light.
Initially, I had a discharge with an unusual odor, but that has resolved.
However, I am still experiencing light bleeding and discharge resembling cottage cheese.
Recently, I had a vaginal infection and saw a gynecologist, who prescribed suppositories and topical medication, which helped me recover.
If I experience itching in the genital area, I apply the cream that my doctor previously prescribed, which has alleviated the itching and odor issues, but the discharge and bleeding have not improved.
I do not use any vaginal douches and only wash with clean water.
I would like to ask the doctor: 1.
Given this situation, should I stop taking the contraceptive pills? I did not have these issues with other brands of contraceptives before.
2.
Since I am currently not in Taiwan and will not return for over a month, are there any other methods to improve my current symptoms? I apologize for the trouble, thank you!

More Info
Abnormal bleeding and discharge while on birth control can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and management strategies. Based on your description, it seems that you have recently switched to a new brand of oral contraceptive (X brand) and are experiencing changes in your menstrual cycle, including reduced bleeding, abnormal discharge, and a previous history of vaginal inflammation.
1. Should You Stop Taking the Birth Control Pill?
It's not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle when they switch to a new brand of birth control pills. These changes can include lighter periods, spotting between periods, or changes in discharge. The hormonal composition of different brands can affect individuals differently. If your bleeding is light and you are not experiencing any severe side effects, it may not be necessary to stop taking the pill immediately. However, if the spotting persists or worsens, or if you experience any other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They may suggest switching to a different formulation that may be better suited for your body.
2. Managing Symptoms While Abroad:
Since you are currently away from Taiwan and experiencing these symptoms, there are a few strategies you can consider to manage your condition until you can see a healthcare provider:
- Maintain Hygiene: Continue to practice good hygiene by washing the genital area with mild soap and water. Avoid using douches or scented products that can irritate the vaginal area.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including the frequency and amount of bleeding, the characteristics of the discharge, and any associated symptoms like itching or odor. This information will be helpful when you consult a healthcare provider.
- Over-the-Counter Remedies: If you experience itching or discomfort, you may consider using over-the-counter antifungal creams if you suspect a yeast infection, but be cautious and ensure that it is appropriate for your situation. Avoid self-diagnosing and self-treating without professional guidance.
- Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Balanced Diet: Good nutrition and hydration can support your overall health and may help in managing some symptoms.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention:
If you notice any of the following, it is important to seek medical attention promptly:
- Heavy bleeding or passing large clots
- Severe abdominal pain
- Fever or chills, which may indicate an infection
- Persistent or worsening symptoms despite home management
4. Potential Causes of Your Symptoms:
The changes in your bleeding and discharge could be attributed to several factors:
- Hormonal Adjustments: Your body may still be adjusting to the new hormones from the birth control pill, which can take a few cycles.
- Previous Vaginal Inflammation: If you had a recent infection, it could take time for your vaginal flora to normalize, which may affect discharge.
- Other Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as polyps, fibroids, or infections can also cause abnormal bleeding and discharge. If these symptoms persist, further evaluation may be necessary.
In conclusion, while it may not be necessary to stop your birth control pill immediately, monitoring your symptoms and maintaining good hygiene is essential. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a healthcare provider as soon as possible, whether in your current location or upon returning to Taiwan. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these concerns with a professional will provide you with the best course of action.
