Burning sensation during urination?

Hello Doctor, I started noticing a burning sensation while urinating two days ago.
At first, I didn't think much of it, but this morning I noticed a small amount of white discharge.
The burning sensation while urinating is still present and accompanied by a slight stinging pain.
What could be the issue? How should I handle this? Note: I visited a public hot spring about a week ago but did not use any towels provided by the establishment.
Regarding sexual activity, I have a single partner, and our last sexual encounter was about a month ago.

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

It sounds like it could be urethritis.
I recommend that you see a urologist for examination and treatment as soon as possible, and avoid discussing it online.

More Info

Burning sensation during urination, often accompanied by discomfort or pain, can be indicative of several underlying medical conditions. The symptoms you've described—burning during urination, a slight white discharge, and a persistent sensation of pain—are commonly associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or other urological conditions.

Possible Causes
1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): UTIs are one of the most common causes of burning during urination. They occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract, leading to inflammation and irritation. Symptoms typically include a burning sensation, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and sometimes lower abdominal pain.

2. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Conditions such as chlamydia or gonorrhea can also cause burning during urination. These infections often present with additional symptoms, such as unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intercourse.

3. Irritation or Inflammation: This can result from various factors, including chemical irritants (such as soaps, lotions, or bubble baths), dehydration, or even certain foods and beverages (like caffeine, alcohol, or spicy foods).
4. Prostatitis: In males, inflammation of the prostate gland can lead to burning sensations during urination, along with pelvic pain and difficulty urinating.

5. Urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra, often due to infection, can cause similar symptoms.
6. Vaginal Infections: In females, conditions like yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis can lead to irritation and burning sensations during urination.

Recommended Actions
1. Seek Medical Attention: Given the symptoms you've described, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a urinalysis and possibly a urine culture to determine if an infection is present and identify the causative organism.

2. Avoid Irritants: In the meantime, avoid potential irritants such as scented soaps, bubble baths, and douches. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help dilute the urine and may alleviate some discomfort.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the presence of fever, chills, or worsening pain, which could indicate a more serious infection requiring immediate medical attention.

4. Consider STI Testing: If you are sexually active, especially with a new partner, it may be wise to get tested for STIs, even if you do not have other symptoms.
5. Practice Safe Sex: Using condoms can help reduce the risk of STIs and may also prevent irritation from bodily fluids.

Conclusion
Burning during urination is a symptom that should not be ignored, especially when accompanied by other signs such as discharge. While it may be tempting to dismiss it as a minor issue, the potential for underlying infections necessitates a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and lead to a quicker recovery. If you experience worsening symptoms or develop new ones, do not hesitate to seek medical care promptly.
