Induced Abortion and Case Records
I had an abortion a few years ago and would like to know if this will be recorded in my health insurance card's medical history or in a cloud system.
Additionally, since I took medication after the procedure (which I believe was to help the uterus contract), if I go to another obstetrics and gynecology hospital for a check-up, will they be able to find out that I had an abortion?

More Info
In Taiwan, the healthcare system is designed to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy, especially regarding sensitive medical procedures such as abortion. When a patient undergoes an abortion, the details of the procedure, including any medications prescribed post-operation, are typically recorded in the patient's medical history. This information is stored in the National Health Insurance (NHI) database, which is accessible to healthcare providers involved in the patient's care.
To address your specific concerns:
1. Medical Records and Privacy: Yes, your abortion procedure will likely be documented in your health records, which can be accessed through your NHI card. However, access to this information is restricted to healthcare providers who are directly involved in your care. This means that if you visit a different gynecological clinic, the new healthcare provider may be able to see your past medical history, including the abortion, if they access your records through the NHI system.
2. Confidentiality Measures: While the records are accessible to healthcare providers, there are strict regulations in place to protect patient privacy. Healthcare professionals are bound by confidentiality laws, meaning they cannot disclose your medical history to unauthorized individuals without your consent. If you have concerns about privacy, you can discuss them with your healthcare provider, who can explain how your information is handled and what measures are in place to protect your privacy.
3. Impact on Future Medical Care: If you are concerned about how your past abortion might affect future medical consultations, it is important to communicate openly with your healthcare provider. They will need to know your complete medical history to provide the best care possible. However, you can also request that certain sensitive information be handled discreetly, and most providers will respect your wishes.
4. Legal and Ethical Considerations: In Taiwan, the legal framework surrounding abortion and patient privacy is designed to protect individuals' rights. The Medical Care Act and the Personal Data Protection Act provide guidelines on how medical records should be managed and the rights patients have regarding their health information. If you feel that your privacy has been compromised, you have the right to file a complaint with the relevant authorities.
5. Advice for Patients: If you are uncomfortable with the idea of your abortion being part of your medical records, consider discussing this with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on how to manage your medical history and what options you have regarding privacy. Additionally, if you are seeking care from a new provider, you can inquire about their policies on accessing and sharing medical records.
In summary, while your abortion may be recorded in your medical history accessible through the NHI system, there are robust privacy protections in place. It is crucial to communicate with your healthcare providers about any concerns you have regarding your medical records and to understand your rights under Taiwanese law. If you have further questions or need clarification, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your situation.
