Urgent! Concerns about missed doses of Yaz and pregnancy issues!
Hello, doctor.
I have been taking Yaz and have completed 6 packs.
I took the medication on December 12, forgot to take it on December 13 (the 8th day), took two pills together on December 14 (more than 24 hours late), took the medication at 10 PM on December 17, forgot to take it on December 18, and took one pill at 8 PM and another at 10 PM on December 19.
The medication instructions state that I can take a missed dose within 24 hours.
I would like to ask if I can have unprotected intercourse in the next 7 days without the risk of pregnancy.
Thank you, doctor! Should I still use protection for the next 7 days? Thank you for your guidance!

When it comes to concerns about pregnancy after missing birth control pills, it's essential to understand how oral contraceptives work and the implications of missed doses. Birth control pills, like the one you mentioned (Yasmin), are designed to prevent ovulation and regulate the menstrual cycle. However, their effectiveness can be compromised if doses are missed.
In your case, you missed a pill on December 13 (the 8th day of your cycle) and took two pills on December 14 to make up for it. You then missed another pill on December 18 and took two pills on December 19. According to the guidelines for many combination oral contraceptives, if you miss one pill, you should take it as soon as you remember. If you miss two pills in a row during the first two weeks of your cycle, you should take the last missed pill as soon as you remember and continue taking the rest of the pills as scheduled. However, if you miss two pills in the third week, you should skip the placebo pills and start a new pack immediately.
Given that you have missed multiple pills, especially in the first two weeks of your cycle, there is a risk of ovulation occurring. If you have unprotected intercourse during this time, the likelihood of pregnancy increases. The general recommendation is to use backup contraception, such as condoms, for at least seven days after missing pills to ensure adequate protection.
In your situation, since you have missed pills and had unprotected intercourse, it is advisable to use condoms for the next seven days to minimize the risk of unintended pregnancy. Additionally, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, you may consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late or if you experience any unusual symptoms.
It's also important to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can provide guidance based on your specific situation and help you understand the best course of action moving forward. If you find yourself frequently forgetting to take your pills, you might want to discuss alternative contraceptive methods with your doctor, such as an IUD, implant, or other long-acting reversible contraceptives that do not require daily attention.
In summary, due to the missed pills and unprotected intercourse, there is a possibility of pregnancy. Using condoms for the next week is a prudent step to take. Always consult your healthcare provider for tailored advice and to explore the best contraceptive options for your lifestyle.
