Numbness Around the Right Eye: Causes and When to Seek Help - Neurology

There is a tingling sensation around the area from the eye to the temple on the right side?

Sometimes I experience this symptom, mostly after I am very tired (after surfing or finishing work).
It usually occurs while sitting and looking at the computer, where I feel a tingling sensation around my right eye and near the temple.
However, when I test my smile, it appears normal, and closing my eyes is also normal, although my eye feels slightly itchy.
What kind of sign could this be? Does it require treatment? It happens irregularly, not every day.

Dr. Cai Zongzhang reply Neurology

Numbness around the right eye, especially when it occurs after periods of fatigue or prolonged screen time, can be concerning but may not always indicate a serious underlying condition. This symptom can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help determine whether medical attention is necessary.

Possible Causes of Numbness Around the Eye
1. Eye Strain: Prolonged use of computers or screens can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include dryness, irritation, and sometimes numbness or tingling sensations around the eyes. This is often due to reduced blinking and muscle fatigue.

2. Nerve Compression or Irritation: The trigeminal nerve, which supplies sensation to the face, can become irritated or compressed due to posture, muscle tension, or even sinus issues. This can lead to numbness or tingling sensations around the eye and forehead.

3. Tension Headaches: Stress and fatigue can lead to tension headaches, which may cause referred sensations such as numbness or tingling around the eyes and temples. These headaches often accompany muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders.

4. Sinus Issues: Sinusitis or sinus pressure can cause numbness or tingling sensations around the eyes, particularly if there is inflammation or pressure in the sinus cavities.

5. Migraine: Some individuals experience sensory disturbances, including numbness, as part of a migraine aura. This can occur even in the absence of a headache.

6. Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Although less common, numbness around the eyes can be a symptom of neurological conditions such as MS. This is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as vision changes or coordination issues.

When to Seek Medical Help
While occasional numbness around the eye, especially after fatigue, may not be alarming, there are specific situations where you should seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the numbness becomes frequent or lasts for an extended period, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience other symptoms such as vision changes (blurriness, double vision), severe headaches, facial weakness, or difficulty speaking, seek immediate medical attention.

- Worsening Condition: If the numbness worsens or spreads to other areas of the face or body, it is essential to get evaluated.

Recommendations for Management
1. Rest and Eye Care: Ensure you take regular breaks when using screens. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This can help reduce eye strain.

2. Posture and Ergonomics: Maintain good posture while sitting at your computer. Ensure your screen is at eye level and that you are sitting comfortably to avoid muscle tension.

3. Hydration and Humidification: Keep yourself hydrated and consider using a humidifier in dry environments to prevent dry eyes.

4. Stress Management: Engage in stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise to help alleviate tension headaches and muscle tightness.

5. Consultation: If symptoms persist or worsen, consider consulting an ophthalmologist or a neurologist for a thorough evaluation. They may perform tests to rule out any serious conditions.

In conclusion, while numbness around the right eye can often be attributed to benign causes such as eye strain or tension headaches, it is crucial to monitor the symptoms and seek medical advice if they become persistent or are accompanied by other concerning signs. Taking proactive steps in managing eye health and overall well-being can significantly reduce the occurrence of such symptoms.
