Feeling something is off when having a bowel movement?
About a month and a half ago, I started experiencing daily diarrhea, with the stool color being a normal yellow-brown, occasionally darker.
Sometimes my stomach makes noticeable gurgling sounds and has mild pain, but there are no other symptoms.
I have seen a gastroenterologist several times, and the results of my stool occult blood test were normal.
I have not undergone a colonoscopy yet.
The doctors have suggested that it might be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Currently, I am undergoing acupuncture for weight loss and doing some exercise, and I have lost about 8 kg over the past six months.
I commute between Keelung and New Taipei City.
Although I no longer have daily diarrhea, I still experience some unusual symptoms:
1.
I consistently have watery diarrhea every Monday, which gradually changes to a mushy or sometimes formed consistency from Tuesday to Sunday, then cycles back.
Occasionally, I experience some abdominal pain, but it resolves after a bowel movement.
2.
The stool color is mostly a normal yellow-brown or brown, and sometimes it resembles vegetable scraps.
The quantity is not much, and the sensation fades quickly, but it is mushy in consistency (recently).
3.
My stomach tends to gurgle more easily in the morning (around 6 AM) and before bed (around midnight).
The sounds are not very loud, but they are audible.
It does not significantly affect my sleep, but I feel that my symptoms do not align with severe cases described online.
I tend to overthink things and feel a bit anxious.
I would appreciate your clarification.
Thank you!

Understanding digestive issues, particularly those involving daily diarrhea and gut health concerns, can be quite complex. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing a range of gastrointestinal symptoms, including daily diarrhea, occasional abdominal pain, and changes in stool consistency and color. These symptoms can be indicative of several underlying conditions, with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) being a common diagnosis in such cases.
IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits, which can include diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both. The fact that your stool varies from watery to mud-like and occasionally has a normal appearance suggests that your bowel movements are indeed irregular, which aligns with IBS symptoms. The cyclical nature of your symptoms, particularly the pattern of having watery stools on Mondays, could be related to stress, dietary choices, or changes in your routine, especially considering your commuting lifestyle and the potential stressors associated with it.
Your mention of undergoing acupuncture and weight loss efforts indicates that you are actively seeking ways to manage your health, which is commendable. However, it's essential to consider how these changes might affect your digestive system. For instance, significant dietary changes or weight loss can sometimes lead to temporary gastrointestinal disturbances. Additionally, the incorporation of new foods or supplements could also play a role in your symptoms.
Given that you have already consulted with gastroenterologists and undergone stool tests that returned normal results, it seems that more serious conditions such as infections or inflammatory bowel disease have been ruled out. However, the absence of a colonoscopy means that conditions like polyps or other structural abnormalities have not been evaluated. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it may be worth discussing the possibility of undergoing a colonoscopy for a more comprehensive assessment of your gastrointestinal health.
In terms of dietary management, it is advisable to maintain a food diary to identify any potential triggers that may exacerbate your symptoms. Common triggers for IBS can include high-fat foods, dairy products, caffeine, and certain types of carbohydrates known as FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols). By tracking your food intake and symptoms, you may be able to pinpoint specific foods that contribute to your digestive issues.
Additionally, consider incorporating more fiber into your diet, as it can help regulate bowel movements. Soluble fiber, found in foods like oats, bananas, and apples, can be particularly beneficial for managing diarrhea. Staying well-hydrated is also crucial, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea, as it can lead to dehydration.
Lastly, managing stress through relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can significantly impact your gut health. Stress is known to exacerbate IBS symptoms, so finding effective ways to cope with stressors in your life is essential.
In summary, while your symptoms may align with IBS, further evaluation may be necessary if they persist. Keeping a detailed record of your symptoms and dietary habits, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, can help you manage your digestive health more effectively. If you continue to experience discomfort or have concerns, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice.
