Urinary tract infection (UTI)

When I was about 11 years old, I experienced pain while urinating, and after retracting the foreskin, I found pus and scabs on the glans.
I heard that this is a urinary tract infection, which can cause nocturia (affecting sleep), but I don't recall having the behavior of frequently urinating after falling asleep as a child.
Recently, I consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner due to the presence of cloudy urine, and it was strange that the issues with incomplete urination and all urinary problems improved after taking two packets of medicine.
I would like to ask the doctor if nocturia caused by urinary tract infections leading to prostatitis and other inflammatory conditions (even though it seems to have occurred rarely in my childhood) could contribute to growth issues, as I am not tall, but my parents are also not tall.

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/12/29

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

The white substance found under the foreskin during childhood is not pus; it is likely a buildup of shed epithelial cells, and there is no inflammation or issue with nocturia.
Recently, if there are concerns about urination, taking two packets of medication seems a bit unusual.
It is advisable to consult a urologist for an examination and discuss any symptoms with the physician.
Additionally, there is no literature indicating a relationship between prostatitis and height.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) during childhood can raise concerns about various health issues, including their potential impact on growth and development. In your case, you experienced painful urination and other symptoms around the age of 11, which were later attributed to a UTI. It’s important to understand how UTIs and related conditions can affect a child's health, particularly regarding growth.

First, let's clarify that UTIs are common in children and can occur for various reasons, including anatomical factors, hygiene practices, and sometimes underlying medical conditions. The symptoms you described, such as painful urination and the presence of discharge, suggest that you may have had an infection that required medical attention. It’s crucial to treat UTIs promptly to prevent complications, including potential kidney damage.

Regarding your concern about whether a UTI or related conditions, such as prostatitis, could affect your height, the current medical literature does not support a direct link between UTIs and stunted growth. Growth in children is primarily influenced by genetic factors, nutrition, and overall health. While chronic illnesses can impact growth, isolated episodes of UTIs, especially if treated effectively, are unlikely to have a significant long-term effect on height.

In your case, you mentioned that your parents are also not particularly tall, which suggests that genetic factors may play a more significant role in your height than any past urinary issues. It’s also worth noting that growth patterns can vary widely among individuals, and many factors contribute to a person's final height.

As for the concern about nocturia (nighttime urination) and its relation to sleep disturbances, while UTIs can cause increased frequency of urination, it’s essential to differentiate between occasional nocturia and chronic conditions. If you did not experience frequent nighttime urination as a child, it’s possible that your symptoms were more acute rather than chronic, which may not have lasting effects on your growth or overall health.

In terms of prevention and management, maintaining good hygiene practices, staying hydrated, and seeking prompt medical attention for any urinary symptoms are crucial. If you continue to experience urinary issues or have concerns about your growth or health, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional, such as a urologist or a pediatrician, who can provide tailored advice and treatment options.

In summary, while UTIs can cause discomfort and require treatment, they are not typically associated with long-term impacts on growth, especially when managed properly. If you have ongoing concerns about your health or growth, it’s best to discuss them with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized insights based on your medical history and current health status.
