Diagnosis of depression
I recently visited a general mental health clinic and shared my current situation with the doctor.
I asked him if I had any disorders, but he kept telling me that it wasn't important and that it was just for others to read.
I have high levels of anxiety and depressive tendencies, and he only prescribed me sleeping pills and antidepressants.
However, for me, receiving a diagnosis is very important.
If I don't meet the criteria for a disorder, I would like to know that clearly.
His inability to provide me with a definitive answer has been quite distressing.
I would like to ask if a general hospital's psychiatry department can provide a diagnosis for depression? Where can I get a proper diagnosis?

Yes, a general hospital's psychiatry department can diagnose depression. In fact, psychiatric departments in hospitals are specifically trained to assess and diagnose various mental health conditions, including depression. If you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression, it is crucial to seek help from a qualified mental health professional who can provide a thorough evaluation.
When you visit a psychiatrist, they will typically conduct a comprehensive assessment that includes a detailed interview about your symptoms, medical history, and any relevant life events. They may also use standardized diagnostic tools or questionnaires to help determine the severity of your symptoms and how they impact your daily life. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria are commonly used to diagnose depression, which includes symptoms such as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and difficulty concentrating.
It's understandable that you feel frustrated with the previous consultation where you did not receive a clear diagnosis. A diagnosis is important not only for understanding your condition but also for guiding treatment options. If the doctor you consulted did not provide a satisfactory answer, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from another psychiatrist or a mental health professional at a different facility.
In the United States, many general hospitals have dedicated psychiatry departments or mental health clinics that offer comprehensive services for diagnosing and treating depression and other mental health disorders. You can look for hospitals that are affiliated with medical schools or are recognized as mental health centers, as they often have more resources and specialists available. Additionally, community mental health centers, private practices, and outpatient clinics can also provide psychiatric evaluations and treatment.
If you are unsure where to go, consider starting with your primary care physician, who can refer you to a psychiatrist or mental health specialist. They can help you navigate the healthcare system and find the appropriate resources for your needs.
In summary, a general hospital's psychiatry department is equipped to diagnose depression. If you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression, it is essential to seek a thorough evaluation from a qualified mental health professional. Don't hesitate to advocate for yourself and seek a second opinion if you feel your concerns are not being addressed. Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and getting the right diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve your quality of life.
