Contraceptive pill issues
Hello doctor, today I took the 28th birth control pill, which is the placebo pill.
I usually use a marker to write the date on it to avoid forgetting, but after washing my hands today, I still had water on them and accidentally got the pill in contact with the ink from the marker.
I then swallowed the pill after rinsing it with water, which caused the outer layer to dissolve a bit.
Tomorrow I will start a new pack of birth control pills.
Will this affect the contraceptive effectiveness? Thank you, as I am unsure if any substances could impact the efficacy of the medication.
Thank you.
Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/01/03

Hello, the following medications may interact with oral contraceptives:
1.
Antibiotics (Penicillin, Cephalosporins, Erythromycin, Sulfonamides, Bactrim, Chloramphenicol) - may reduce the gut flora that aids in absorption, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of the contraceptive.
2.
Sedatives (Barbiturates) - increase the metabolism of contraceptives, reducing their effectiveness.
3.
Antiepileptic drugs (Primidone, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine) - increase the metabolism of contraceptives, reducing their effectiveness.
4.
Tuberculosis medications (Rifampicin, Isoniazid).
5.
Antidiabetic medications (Rosiglitazone).
6.
Acetaminophen and Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) - may inhibit the metabolism of estrogen, leading to increased levels and a higher incidence of side effects.
7.
Oral contraceptives may affect the action of anticoagulants.
8.
Smoking - increases the metabolism of contraceptives, reducing their effectiveness.
Based on your description, it is recommended to continue taking the next pack of pills.
If any abnormalities occur, please consult your physician for evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.
Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to the effectiveness of birth control pills, the concern about ink from a marker contaminating the pill is understandable, but it is important to clarify a few points regarding how birth control pills work and what could potentially affect their effectiveness.
Birth control pills, particularly combination pills that contain both estrogen and progestin, work primarily by preventing ovulation. They also thicken cervical mucus to hinder sperm movement and alter the uterine lining to prevent implantation. The active ingredients in these pills are carefully formulated to ensure their effectiveness when taken as directed.
In your case, you mentioned that you accidentally got some ink from a permanent marker on the last inactive pill and then rinsed it off before taking it. The key point here is that the active ingredients in the birth control pill are contained within the pill itself, which is designed to dissolve in your digestive system, releasing the hormones into your bloodstream. The outer coating of the pill is not where the active ingredients are located; therefore, any ink that may have touched the pill is unlikely to affect the hormones inside.
Moreover, the ink from a permanent marker is not known to contain any substances that would interfere with the hormonal activity of birth control pills. The primary concern with birth control pills is missing doses or taking them inconsistently, which can lead to a decrease in their effectiveness. Since you took the pill as intended, even with the minor incident of ink exposure, it should not compromise your contraceptive protection.
However, it is always a good practice to avoid any unnecessary contamination of your medication. If you have concerns about the safety of your medication or if you experience any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
In summary, the ink from a permanent marker on the inactive pill is unlikely to affect the effectiveness of your birth control pills. As long as you continue to take your pills as directed and maintain a consistent schedule, you should remain protected against unintended pregnancy. If you have any further questions or concerns about your birth control method or any other health-related issues, don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for assistance.
