Feeling of a foreign body in the throat?
Hello Doctor: About a week ago, after drinking a beverage, I started to feel a sensation of something stuck on the left side of my throat.
There is no swelling when I touch my throat, but if I cough forcefully, it feels like something moves up but doesn't come out.
When I apply pressure on the left side of my throat, it seems to shift towards the center.
I used a glass straw at that time, so I'm a bit worried it might be a piece of glass.
Eating does not cause any sensation (no feeling of something stuck or pain), but when I drink tea (black tea or green tea) for breakfast, I can feel its presence, and again, it only moves when I apply pressure on the left side initially.

More Info
The sensation of a foreign object in the throat can be quite distressing, and it’s understandable that you are concerned about this feeling, especially after consuming a drink. There are several potential causes for this sensation, and I will outline them along with possible solutions.
Possible Causes
1. Irritation or Inflammation: The throat can become irritated due to various factors, including allergies, acid reflux, or even a recent upper respiratory infection. This irritation can lead to a sensation of something being stuck in the throat.
2. Muscle Tension: Stress and anxiety can cause muscle tension in the throat, leading to a feeling of tightness or the sensation of a lump. This is often referred to as "globus sensation."
3. Esophageal Issues: Conditions such as esophageal spasms or dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) can create a feeling of obstruction in the throat. If you have experienced any difficulty swallowing or pain while eating, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Foreign Body: While it’s less common, the concern about a foreign object, such as a piece of glass from a straw, is valid. If a foreign body were present, it could cause discomfort or a sensation of something being stuck.
5. Postnasal Drip: Allergies or sinus issues can lead to postnasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, causing irritation and a sensation of fullness or obstruction.
Recommended Solutions
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated can help soothe throat irritation and thin mucus if postnasal drip is the issue.
2. Gargling Salt Water: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and soothe the throat. This is a simple home remedy that can provide relief.
3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from irritants such as smoke, strong odors, and allergens that may exacerbate throat irritation.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may arise, such as difficulty swallowing, pain, or changes in voice. If these occur, it’s important to seek medical attention.
5. Consult a Specialist: If the sensation persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a laryngoscopy, to visualize the throat and esophagus and rule out any serious conditions.
6. Stress Management: If anxiety or stress is a contributing factor, consider techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga to help alleviate muscle tension in the throat.
Conclusion
While the sensation of a foreign object in the throat can be alarming, many cases are benign and can be managed with simple home remedies and lifestyle adjustments. However, given your concern about a possible foreign body, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional if the sensation persists or if you experience any worsening symptoms. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind.
