Throat issues

Hello doctor, a few days ago I woke up from a nap and felt a tightness in my throat.
Three days ago, I started experiencing a sensation of obstruction from my throat to my chest when drinking water or eating.
It doesn't hurt, nor does it feel like something is stuck, but it feels somewhat like being slightly choked on an egg yolk.
After eating, I tend to burp easily.
At the same time, I have small ulcers in my mouth (which I often get before my menstrual period, but my period hasn't arrived yet).
When I haven't eaten, I also feel a bit of tightness in my throat.

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the situation you described may be chronic pharyngitis.
It is recommended to seek medical attention for a laryngoscopy examination (to rule out any masses) and to consider medication treatment.
In addition to medication, please pay attention to the following daily living precautions: avoid lying down for two hours after eating, and refrain from coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol, fried foods, and spicy foods, as these can help improve symptoms.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Chi Chao-Yun, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Throat tightness and discomfort can be concerning symptoms, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sensation of tightness in your throat, a feeling of obstruction when swallowing, and the presence of oral ulcers. Let's break down these symptoms and explore possible explanations.

Possible Causes of Throat Tightness and Discomfort
1. Muscle Tension: Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension in the throat, which may cause a sensation of tightness. This is often referred to as "globus sensation," where individuals feel as though there is a lump in their throat, even when there is none.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can cause irritation in the throat and esophagus, leading to a feeling of tightness or discomfort. Symptoms may include a sensation of food being stuck, frequent belching, and throat irritation.

3. Allergic Reactions: Allergies can cause inflammation in the throat, leading to discomfort. If you've recently been exposed to allergens, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to throat discomfort. While you mentioned that there is no pain, some infections can cause mild irritation without significant pain.

5. Oral Ulcers: The presence of small ulcers in your mouth could be related to a condition such as aphthous stomatitis, which can cause discomfort and may contribute to the sensation of tightness in the throat.

6. Esophageal Disorders: Conditions such as esophagitis or esophageal spasms can lead to sensations of tightness and difficulty swallowing. These conditions may require further evaluation by a gastroenterologist.

Recommendations for Management
- Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids to keep your throat moist and help with swallowing.

- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from spicy, acidic, or very hot foods that may aggravate your throat.

- Manage Stress: If you suspect that anxiety or stress may be contributing to your symptoms, consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Since you have ongoing symptoms, it would be wise to consult an ENT specialist or your primary care physician. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a laryngoscopy, to assess your throat and rule out any serious conditions.

- Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, such as the onset of pain, difficulty breathing, or changes in swallowing. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Severe pain in the throat or chest
- Swelling in the throat or face
- High fever or persistent cough
In conclusion, while throat tightness and discomfort can stem from various causes, understanding the underlying factors is crucial for effective management. Given your symptoms, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is recommended to determine the best course of action and to ensure that there are no serious underlying conditions.
